BudgIT accuses NASS of turning agencies into 'project warehouses'
BudgIT, a civic organisation, has accused the National Assembly of turning government agencies into warehouses.
BudgIT, in a post on X, said 1,142 projects worth N320 billion were inserted into the Federal Co-Operative College, Oji River’s budget.
“The Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute got an extra 856 projects for N406 billion,” BudgIT said.
The organisation said the trend paints a troubling picture of Nigeria’s budgeting process – one it says has become a “playground for self-serving political interests.”
These insertions, according to BudgIT, were made with little to no justification, undermining national planning and diverting funds away from essential development priorities.
“The thing is, most of these agencies can’t execute these projects, thus leaving poorly executed projects across the country,” it said.
Here are some of the agencies, insertions, and the amount they got according to BudgIT: Federal College of Horticulture, Dadin-Kowa, Gombe: 635 projects for N181.74bn.
Federal Co-Operative College- Ibadan: 317 projects for N190.89bn.
National Centre for Agricultural Mechanisation- Ilorin: 254 projects for N83.65bn.
Nigeria Institute of Oceanography and Marine Research: 161 projects for N78.98bn.
BudgIT called on civil society, the media, development partners, and citizens to demand reforms to prevent financial mismanagement, ensure justice, equity, and accountable governance.
