Brady McKean, Alex Bauer lead Cold Spring Harbor to fourth consecutive Class D crown

For the fourth year in a row, top-seeded Cold Spring Harbor boys lacrosse has dominated its way to the Nassau Class D championship.

The three-time defending state champions defeated second-seeded Locust Valley 14-4 on Saturday at Hofstra to advance to the Long Island Championship. Overall, 13 Cold Spring Harbor players found the scoresheet, led by senior midfielders Brady McKean and Alex Bauer. McKean scored three goals and Bauer fed out three assists, all of which came in the second quarter to help put the game out of reach early.

The Seahawks led by only two goals entering the second quarter before Bauer’s facilitation opened things up, as he assisted on goals by junior attackman Daniel Touhy, McKean and junior midfielder Dylan Reilly. With just 50.5 seconds left in the first half, McKean caught a feed from senior attackman Kevin Burns to make it 8-1 at halftime.

“I think my assists show that it’s not just one guy, it’s a team effort,” Bauer told Newsday after the game. “I think with us working together as a team, we do the most, we do our best and we give it our all.”

Bauer has been a part of all four of these consecutive county champion Cold Spring Harbor teams. However, being one of the leaders in the room for this team made this title-winning experience unique.

“This one’s way different,” Bauer said. “As you grow through the years, you look toward the grade above to mentor you. Now, being in the highest grade, I just want to give all the advice I can and the things I’ve learned to the younger kids here.”

For McKean, posting a hat trick in the county championship game felt good, but his focus is on the road ahead.

“I think we can build on this for the next game — the LIC,” McKean said. “We were great at moving the ball, had a lot of movement off ball and went through our sets well, like we did all year. We executed.”

Sophomore faceoff specialist Alex Vitale is in his first year with the varsity team, and he made his addition felt early and often on Saturday. He won 13 of his 14 faceoff opportunities, including each of his first 11. He also picked up nine ground balls.

It’s cool to be a part of Cold Spring Harbor’s roster of champions.

“It feels great; who wouldn’t want to be a part of this?” Vitale said.

For Cold Spring Harbor (12-6), Touhy and senior attackman Roger Testa each finished with two goals. Sophomore attackman Roy Testa added two goals and an assist. For Locust Valley (11-7), eighth-grade attackman James Fox had a goal and two assists.

Cold Spring Harbor will face Center Moriches on Wednesday at East Islip Middle School for the Long Island Class D championship at 4:30 p.m.
