Bookoff Massapequa: Long Island's treasure trove for video games and anime collectors - Newsday
Don’t let the name Bookoff Massapequa fool you. This 10-month-old secondhand specialty store carries more than just reading material.
At this local offshoot branch of the Japanese discount chain, paperbacks, graphic novels, coffee-table tomes and other page-turners share shelf space with a mix of media items. There are movies, CDs and vinyl, video games and anime figures. The shop sells and buys all these items, so it’s a two-way retail street.
"We try to give items a second chance at life and a new home," says store manager Diana Hernandez, 35.
The first U.S. store opened in Manhattan in 1999. Last June, Bookoff Massapequa became the first location to open on Long Island. The number of U.S. shops in the growing franchise has now hit 20, says Kenichi Takahashi, 48, Bookoff USA vice president in charge of the company’s four New York stores.
The business has been building slowly since opening at the Sunrise Highway location. Shoppers run the gamut — from browsers and seasoned penny-savers to treasure hunters seeking additions to collections. Books and anime figures are particularly in demand, says Takahashi.
As for prices, books can sell for $1 to $5, while hard-to-find and out-of-print publications run higher. CDs and DVDs can go for about $2 and up. Mini anime figures can sell for $20 and up.
Because Bookoff buys merchandise it has become a destination for Long Islanders downsizing homes, clutter-proofing attics or simply looking to sell. The price paid for items varies on a case-by-case basis. Guidelines for selling items are at bookoffusa.com.
Bookoff Massapequa boasts more than 100 Gashapon vending machines that dispense random small toys inside plastic capsules. Machines take varying numbers of $2 tokens. The name of the machines reflect the sounds they make — the crank turning ("gasha") and the capsule landing ("pon").
Between the surprise element, collectible themes and affordability, they’re a big hit. "They’re really popular in Japan," says Hernandez. "They’re popular here."
The same goes for finding bargains on books, movies, music and more.
