Boardy Barn Sundays coming to Blue Point Brewing Company
Call it the Blue Point Barn as Blue Point Brewing Company in Patchogue and the old Boardy Barn, formerly located off Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays, are joining forces this summer for “Boardy Barn Sundays” at the Blue Point tasting room and outdoor beer garden. Those 21 and older can mark their calendars for June 1, July 6 and Aug. 3 and 31 from 1 to 8 p.m.
“Many people connected with the Boardy Barn. It brings back a lot of happy memories,” says Blue Point tasting room manager Michelle Wilkins. “We’re going to put our best foot forward to remind people of those good times.”
The Boardy Barn, which opened April 16, 1970, was known for its upbeat atmosphere during “Sunday Funday” under a big red and white striped outdoor tent, serving cheap draft beer, hard seltzers, mixed drinks, shots and its signature Barn Dogs. DJs would spin sing-along anthems like “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor, Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline,” “Y.M.C.A.” from the Village People, Don McLean’s “American Pie” and “You Shook Me All Night Long” by AC/DC. People sang in unison and covered each other in yellow smiley stickers, which served as the venue’s logo.
Tom Cannuscio of Boardy Barn approached Blue Point as he was looking for a location to hold Boardy Barn events.
“We all loved the idea and we thought we’d give it a go,” says Wilkins. “It’s not going to be under a giant tent; there are rules against that in the village. However, there will be dirty water dogs [hot dogs cooks in water seasoned with herbs], smiley stickers, sing-alongs and the beer, obviously, that will keep the memory alive. We’re here for everyone to let loose.” Food from the regular Blue Point menu will also be available.
In the tradition of the old Boardy Barn, the cover will be minimal and the beer prices get reduced.
“We will be selling Blue Point beer at heavily discounted prices on our select varieties that are lighter for consumption purposes such as Toasted Lager, Long Island Light, Summer Ale and Blueberry Ale served in plastic cups,” Wilkins adds. “There will also be merchandise with Boardy Barn and Blue Point logos for sale.”
Boardy Barn DJs return playing their old familiar sing-along tunes.
“There’s going to be some of the old security guys from the Boardy Barn working as well as photos displayed from the past,” Wilkins says. “We’re hoping that people appreciate it. If it grows, we will continue it into next year and if not, let’s have fun this year!”
