Edward Hillkewicz, of Mastic Beach, faces boating while intoxicated charge in crash, police say
A Mastic Beach man whose boat crashed around Meschutt Beach County Park in Hampton Bays late Sunday with several passengers aboard was charged with boating while intoxicated, according to Southampton Town police.
Southampton Town Police and the Southampton Town Marine Patrol who responded to a 911 call at about 8:50 p.m. learned that a Grady White center console boat had crashed into the Shinnecock Canal jetty and then came to rest on the beach at Meschutt Beach County Park. Officers who interviewed the operator of the vessel, Edward Hillkewicz, 28, determined that he was intoxicated and placed him under arrest, officials said.
Hillkewicz and several passengers were treated at the scene by members of the Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance for injuries sustained during the crash, and then transported to a hospital.
In addition to boating while intoxicated, Hillkewicz was also charged with reckless operation of a vessel and issued several summonses charging him with violations of New York State navigation law.
Hillkewicz was held while awaiting arraignment, Southampton police said. Details from the arraignment were not immediately available Monday afternoon.
