Blue Jays Secure Victory Over Athletics with Strong Offensive Display Led by Clement

The Toronto Blue Jays' offence showcased a significant resurgence, delivering a powerful performance for the second consecutive night in an 11-7 victory over the visiting Oakland Athletics on Friday, May 30, 2025, at Rogers Centre. This win marked the Blue Jays' fifth straight at home and propelled the team (29-28) above the .500 mark for the first time since April 21, signaling a much-needed kick-start after a challenging road trip.
Toronto's bats were alive, outhitting the Athletics 15-10. Solo home runs from Addison Barger and Ernie Clement highlighted the offensive display. Clement had an exceptional night, collecting four hits and scoring twice, including his leadoff homer in the third inning. Barger and Myles Straw also made significant contributions, each scoring three runs. The offensive depth was evident as the bottom four hitters in the Blue Jays' lineup—Clement, Barger, Straw, and Nathan Lukes—combined for an impressive nine hits and nine runs. Remarkably, this was the first time in nearly nine years that Toronto scored 10-plus runs while also recording 10-plus hits and 10-plus walks in a single game.
The Blue Jays established an early lead, going up 3-1 in the second inning. Clement's solo homer in the third inning sparked a three-run frame for Toronto. The team continued to build on its lead, adding three more runs in the fifth inning. Barger then launched his solo homer as part of a two-run sixth inning, helping Toronto pull away decisively. After scoring only six total runs over their recent six-game road trip, this offensive outburst was a welcome change.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider expressed satisfaction with the team's performance, stating, "Right now is the time to try to put your best foot forward and get a little bit better at the things we need to get a bit better at. And I think they’re doing that." He also praised the collective effort: "Contributions from everyone tonight. It was nice the way we responded (almost) every time they scored. Big hits, and I think we ran the bases really well." Addison Barger attributed the team's hitting success to an aggressive approach: "I think we’re just being aggressive and swinging a lot. In Tampa and Texas we put a lot of good swings on balls that just got (hit) to guys. So balls are starting to drop and go over the wall. I think that’s really the big thing."
Toronto's Chris Bassitt (5-3) earned the victory, working five innings. He recorded six strikeouts but allowed five earned runs on seven hits and two walks. Despite the win, Bassitt expressed frustration with his own performance, calling his year "way too inconsistent" and noting, "When I’m on, I’m really good, but half the time I’m off. I’m not eating any innings and not having quality starts." For the Athletics, who have now lost 15 of their last 16 games, Jeffrey Springs (5-4) took the loss. Springs lasted only two innings, giving up six earned runs on six hits and six walks. Tyler Soderstrom and Shea Langeliers hit solo home runs for the Athletics (23-35).
The game was played in front of an announced crowd of 36,951 at Rogers Centre. The retractable roof was open for most of the contest but began to close during the seventh inning due to dark clouds. The game duration was two hours and 58 minutes.
In other Blue Jays news, right-hander Max Scherzer, limited to one start this season due to a thumb injury, took a positive step in his recovery by throwing 22 pitches in a live bullpen session before the game. Manager John Schneider remarked, "Just standing right there behind him, everything looked really good. The hitters said the same thing." Another bullpen session with a higher pitch count is planned for Scherzer on Tuesday. Additionally, before the game, Montreal native Guerrero received the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame’s 2024 James (Tip) O’Neill Award. He was recognized for leading Canadian-born major leaguers in 2023 with a .323 batting average, .940 OPS, 199 hits, 98 runs, 44 doubles, 72 walks, and a 6.2 WAR.
The four-game series between the Blue Jays and the Athletics will continue on Saturday afternoon. Manager John Schneider confirmed that Braydon Fisher would serve as Toronto’s opener. The Athletics are scheduled to counter with right-hander Gunnar Hoglund (1-2, 5.13 ERA).
