In a sea of gowns, nothing stands out on a red carpet like a beautifully tailored suit.

For years, we've watched in awe as famous women have strutted the ruby rug in suits and tuxes of all colours and shapes.

From Julia Roberts' iconic '90s menswear moment to more recent suiting triumphs, courtesy of the likes of Nicole Kidman, Ayo Edebiri, Doechii and more, keep scrolling to see some of the most memorable looks.

When Celine Dion hit the red carpet at the 1999 Oscars, it seemed at first glance that she was wearing a simple all-white set, teamed with a hat.

But the moment the singer turned around, all was revealed...

It was, in fact, a white tuxedo with the blazer worn backwards in an unexpected twist.

The John Galliano suit caused plenty of buzz – and divided opinion – with Dion later saying it made such a statement because "everyone [else] was wearing dresses, not pants".

"I was the only one with pants in a backward suit from Galliano and if I would do this today it would work. It was avant-garde at the time," she told People in 2017.

"And it doesn't matter, you just have to assume what you wear, you wear, and I did."

Julia Roberts

She's worn plenty of show-stopping gowns over the years, but Julia Roberts' menswear moment at the 1990 Golden Globes has well and truly gone down in style history.

The actress wore a grey men's Armani suit that she'd had tailored at the designer's boutique on Rodeo Drive in LA, teamed with a purple floral tie and those gorgeous curls.

Roberts later described it as one of her "all-time favourite outfits".

"I thought that I was very extra in this outfit," she told Vogue.

"I could not have known that it was going to become this, like, statement outfit. I just thought I looked fabulous, and I still have that suit."

Given the legacy of Julia Roberts' suit, it's no surprise fashion lovers did a double take when they saw Ayo Edebiri at the 2025 Golden Globes.

The Bottoms star wore a boxy grey wool suit by Loewe, teamed with a grey shirt and a striking gold tie that resembled a leaf.

Edebiri and her stylist confirmed Roberts' suit had been an inspiration for the look on Instagram.

You can't talk about famous women rocking suits on the red carpet without mentioning Diane Keaton.

For decades, suits and menswear-inspired garments have been a trademark look for the actress, and she's done it plenty of times on the ruby rug.

At the 1997 Oscars, she stood out in a crisp white suit with matching gloves, worn with a sparkling choker.

And another fresh tailored look from Streep, also in 2024 – this time at the Cannes Film Festival.

She perfectly captured the French Riviera essence with the striped blue shirt and white suit.

Cate Blanchett is another suit maestro.

The Aussie icon regularly wears suits and tuxedos on the red carpet; she's pictured here at The Lord Of The Rings: The War of The Rohirrim premiere in London in 2024.

Let's hear it for the Aussies!

File this under: Gwyneth Paltrow's many era-defining red carpet looks.

The actress brought a pop of red to the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards in this glorious velvet Gucci suit, worn with a blue blouse.

The suit was designed by none other than Tom Ford.

Paltrow revisited the look decades later in 2021, wearing a new iteration of the suit to a Gucci show.

Evidently, a pinstripe suit is best served with a hair flick.

Rapper Doechii looked dapper at Variety's Hitmakers Lunch in 2024 , wearing an eye-catching Thom Browne suit.

She teamed the cropped trousers with heeled boots, completing the look with a brooch.

Blake Lively is often spotted in a suit, and loves to put an interesting twist on them.

For a photo call for her 2024 movie It Ends With Us, the actress wore this white oversized suit featuring floral motifs, going bare-chested beneath the tuxedo.

For many fans, it was a throwback to the press trail for Lively's 2018 movie A Simple Favour.

The actress embraced a 'method dressing' approach to her various appearances, wearing chic three-piece suits in a nod to her character's aesthetic.

This pale pink number, teamed with a mint tie, was one of the standouts.

Elle Fanning

Elle Fanning never shies away from a red carpet statement, and this tweed suit was no exception.

The actress wore the eye-catching suit, complete with shirt and tie, at a photocall for her movie A Complete Unknown in 2024.

It was a stylish nod to the '60s aesthetic of the Bob Dylan biopic.
