Big Ten Announces Historic Juju Watkins News Before NCAA Tournament

Published 1 week ago2 minute read

With the No. 2 USC Trojans vying for the Big Ten Championship on Sunday, they're facing off against their rival, the No. 4 UCLA Bruins, for the third time in just over a month. The Trojans have won the previous two meetings, thanks in large part to National Player of the Year favorite and Big Ten Player of the Year Juju Watkins.

Watkins has had a remarkable sophomore season, and at halftime on Sunday afternoon, she had already tallied 18 points, helping USC hold a 10-point lead over the Bruins. With her first half performance, the Big Ten announced some historic news regarding Watkins ahead of the NCAA Tournament.

The Southern California star has now passed Iowa Hawkeyes legend and Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark for second on the NCAA's all-time scoring list for women's players through their first two collegiate seasons. Clark's current teammate with the Fever, Kelsey Mitchell, is No. 1 on the list.

Clark, who is cemented as one of the greatest college basketball players of all time, holds the record as the all-time leading scorer in Division I history. If Watkins continues on her current trajectory, she could be the player to surpass Clark, who had her No. 22 jersey retired this season during a game between Iowa and USC.

USC ended up blowing their halftime lead, with UCLA capturing the Big Ten Tournament title. The Trojans now shift their focus solely to March Madness, which begins in the coming weeks.

This season, Watkins is averaging 24.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 2.2 steals, and 1.9 blocks. She has recently notched her 26th 20-point game of the season. Over her career thus far, she is averaging 25.9 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.4 assists while leading one of the best teams in USC program history.
