Benue Massacre: NSCDC condemns killing of civilians, vows increased intelligence effort
The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, has condemned the recent massacre of unarmed civilians in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, urging his operatives to enhance their intelligence-gathering efforts to apprehend those responsible for the attack.
Audi made the condemnation during a visit to the affected area for an on-site assessment alongside other security officials.
In a statement by the national spokesman of the agency, Babawale Afolabi, the CG expressed condolences to the governor and residents of Yelwata who lost loved ones in the incident, emphasising that the corps is collaborating with other security agencies to prevent further violence.
“The mindless killing of defenceless women and children is unjustifiable,” he stated, calling for a decisive response to restore peace in the state.
The CG ordered the deployment of covert operatives, special forces, and tactical units throughout the state, emphasising the need for coordinated operations to combat the perpetrators. He stressed the importance of a strategic and resilient approach to restoring order.
Audi insisted that “These killings must stop, and we must be very strategic in our efforts.”
He also stated that the NSCDC is contributing to efforts to bring the offenders to justice, as directed by President Bola Tinubu.
Audi also pledged to increase the deployment of tactical operatives and resources to support the Benue command in enhancing security coverage.
The agency boss assured of collaboration with the military, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police, local security forces, and community stakeholders to gather credible information leading to arrests.
The CG appreciated Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Alia for his support and reaffirmed the corps’ dedication to safeguarding national assets and the well-being of the state’s residents
