Baylor lineman Alex Foster killed at 18 in tragic shooting

Baylor defensive lineman Alex Foster was killed in a shooting in Greenville, Miss., early Wednesday morning, the Washington County Coroner’s Office told the Clarion Ledger.

He was 18.

After receiving a call of shots fired shortly after midnight, cops found Foster with multiple gunshot wounds inside a car and died at Delta Health Center 35 minutes later, Greenville Police told the Ledger.

“We are heartbroken by the unexpected passing of Alex Foster, a beloved teammate, friend, and a cherished part of the Baylor Family,” Baylor coach Dave Aranda and athletic director Mack Rhoades said in a joint statement Wednesday. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Alex’s family and all those who loved him. In this time of deep sorrow, we draw strength from our faith and the unwavering love of the Baylor community.

“Our immediate focus is on supporting Alex’s family and his teammates through this devastating loss. Alex’s memory will forever be a part of Baylor University.”

Foster, listed at 6-foot-5 and 292 pounds, redshirted his freshman season at Baylor in 2024.

Foster participated in the Bears’ spring workouts last month.

In a separate message on X, Aranda added, “Alex was a beloved member of our Baylor Family, and we are devastated by this loss. In his time at Baylor he made a long-lasting impact on all of us in the program. Our hearts are broken, and our prayers are with his family, friends and all those who loved him so deeply.”

Foster, who played high school football for St. Joseph Catholic-Greenville, was a four-star recruit and was the No. 152 recruit overall in the nation by On3.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of a young life in our community,” St. Joseph Catholic School said on Facebook. “We extend our prayers and deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Alex Foster, a graduate of our school.”

St. Joseph head coach John Baker told the Ledger that Foster was planning to return to Waco, Texas this weekend.

“He was just a great guy,” Baker said. “Real quiet, soft-spoken guy, you know. Had his head on right and was wanting to make it out. He was a good dude, man.”

The Bears open the 2025 season at home against Auburn on Aug. 29.
