Azimio Leaders Slam Raila-Ruto Pact, Warn of Betrayal and Political Fallout

Published 5 days ago3 minute read

Just a day after ODM leader Raila Odinga and UDA leader William Ruto signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen their partnership in the broad-based government, several leaders allied to the Azimio political camp voiced their discontent.

Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, on Sunday, expressed his dissatisfaction with the development, terming it an act of betrayal.

According to Kioni, the former Prime Minister did not consult his Azimio allies before deciding to collaborate with the President.

Additionally, he warned that the MoU could undermine the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report and compromise Kenya’s electoral process.

''We were all over here as Azimio when we were campaigning. Even if you decided to go, why don't you tell those you were with that you are going? You cannot just bolt out as if you have stolen something''

Kioni pointed out that the cost of living and compensation for victims of police brutality are not likely to be achieved with the partnership between the two.

Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi also raised concerns over the partnership, arguing that the decision by Odinga and Ruto had left a majority of Kenyans feeling excluded.

However, Mwangangi emphasized that since the two leaders had chosen to work together, they must now sincerely address the rampant corruption and impunity in the country.

"We wish ODM well if they have seen it wise to enter the government. Raila has done his part, and now Kenyans have been left alone on the outside," Mwangangi stated.

Former Mosop Member of Parliament Vincent Tuwei also criticized the pact between the two saying that Odinga was so unreliable and would likely shortchange the President.

He further called out President Ruto for blindingly going into the agreement with the veteran opposition leader.

''Our current President is confused as he does not know where to go and what to do. They are all expecting Raila to give a direction. Let me tell you, do not rely on Raila as he can change at the 11 hour and there is nowhere you can go,'' Tuwei said.

However, ODM insiders led by Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa supported the MoU between the President and his boss, maintaining that the decision would benefit Kenyans.

''I want to say here today that we support the handshake of Raila and Ruto. This is because it will help in the development and bridging of unity in our country,'' Barasa maintained.
