Australia shivers as temperature falls below Antarctica; SA, NSW, ACT and Victoria worst-hit, check weather in your area - The Economic Times
Interestingly, Davis Station, a research station of Australia in Antarctica, recorded -8.4C, while the town of Goulburn, 195 km southwest of Sydney dropped to a bone-chilling -10C.
“This was Goulburn's coldest morning in eight years and its coldest June morning in a quarter of a century,” said Weatherzone meteorologist, Corine Brown.
The Australian capital, Canberra, also recorded the lowest temperature in the last eight years with temperatures close to Arctic levels at -7.6C.As the winds blew past east on Sunday, a heavy low is predicted to blow past the Great Australian Bight, continuing the cold phenomena. This shall result in heavy gusts and rain across SA, NSW, and Victoria.
WA’s southwest saw the early effects on Monday morning, with rain spreading all the way from Margaret river to Esperance.
In SA’s coastline, the wind gusts are expected to strengthen as the low tracks east.
“Those winds are then expected to increase over southeastern states in the coming days as the low continues to track east, crossing Tasmania late on Tuesday,” said Ms. Brown.
“Damaging wind gusts are expected for parts of SA, Victoria, NSW, the ACT and Tasmania, including capital cities, mainly on Tuesday and Wednesday,” added Ms. Brown.
With the Bureau of Meteorology issuing severe weather warnings in the alpine region, from NSW to Victoria, snow sport lovers should be ready for an upset as the winds blow across the front.
“Minimum temperatures will warm most significantly from Tuesday as a strong cold front brings increasing cloud cover to NSW and the ACT,” Ms Brown said.
“However, maximum temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday could be extremely cold, with the potential for blizzard conditions over the Australian Alps, and gusty, damaging winds over VIC, NSW and the ACT.”
“So keep an eye on your local forecast and make sure to rug up in the days ahead.” she added.
The central regions throughout NSW are set to face rain as the low moves its way.
That rain is set to fall as snow with sea levels above 500m on Wednesday.
With warnings given up to the northern tablelands, frost warnings are also issued due to the cold.
