Asiedu Nketia Sends Message To Mahama About The Removal of Chief Justice Torkornoo
The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has sent a message to President John Dramani Mahama about the ongoing issue involving the suspended Chief Justice of Ghana, Her Ladyship Gertrude Torkornoo.
Speaking on Onua TV show on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, Mr. Asiedu Nketia stated that the investigation into the Chief Justice should be taken seriously. He said Ghana’s democracy will grow stronger if leaders follow the laws in the constitution, no matter who is involved.
He told President Mahama not to be afraid of international pressure or criticism from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). He argued that no country or foreign group will defend a Chief Justice if it is proven that she broke the law. According to him, a survey done before the December 2024 elections showed that most Ghanaians had lost trust in the judiciary. For this reason, he believes it is right to investigate the Chief Justice if there are serious allegations against her.
Mr. Nketia also warned that if the people who brought the petition lied, they must be punished. But if what they said is true, then the Chief Justice does not deserve to stay in office. He added that the judiciary must be independent and trustworthy, especially for investors and business people who want to do business in Ghana.
President Mahama suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo after a committee found enough reason to start an investigation. She tried to stop the process by going to the Supreme Court, but her request was rejected.
