Artists group inaugurate executives, honour Obi of Onitsha
The Society of Nigerian Artists (SNA) has officially inaugurated its new 13-member National Executive Council (NEC) during a significant event held in Awka, Anambra State, organized by the Southeast Zone of the Society.
This inauguration marks a pivotal moment, signalling a renewed commitment to fostering the growth and advancement of Nigerian art, engaging in cultural policy discussions, and striving for excellence within the global creative landscape.
The highlight of the ceremony was the awarding of the prestigious Grand Patron of SNA (GPsna) accolade to His Royal Majesty, Agbogidi Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha. This esteemed honour, regarded as the highest honorary title conferred by the Society, recognizes His Majesty’s exceptional contributions to preserving and promoting Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.
The event had in attendance the Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment, and Tourism, Mr. Don Onyenji, who represented the governor; the Director General of the National Gallery of Art, represented by Mufu Onifade, Director of Curatorial Services; and other distinguished guests, artists, and patrons who share a passion for elevating the arts in Nigeria.
The newly appointed members include Muhammad Suleiman as President, Archibong Bassey as Vice President for Southeast, Otunba Ini Nkang Dan as Vice President for Southwest, Dr. Gabriel Gegwe as Vice President for North, Mr. Ezekiel Emealereta Udubrae as Vice President for North Central, Rowland Goyit as Secretary General, Dr. Ephraim Ugochukwu as Financial Secretary, Mrs. Vera Chijioke as Treasurer, Dr. Umana Nnochiri as Welfare Secretary, Binta Abbah as Publicity Secretary, Bala Haruna as Assistant Secretary General, Dr. Rabiu Badamasi as Assistant Welfare Secretary, and Lola Komolafe as Auditor 1.
In his inaugural address, President Muhammad Suleiman expressed optimism for the organization’s future and emphasized the importance of unity among members.
He articulated the significance of this gathering in establishing a lasting framework for Nigerian artists, stating, “Today marks a turning point for the Society of Nigerian Artists. We are committed to cultivating a stronger, more unified artistic community grounded in excellence, inclusivity, and innovation.”
The Vice President of the Southeast Zone, Archibong Bassey, who doubles as the host, while welcoming the guests, described the event as a landmark event when he said, “It’s our pleasure to host this significant milestone. We appreciate the trust placed in us and are excited to share this momentous occasion with our fellow artists.”
The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Achebe, addressed the assembly with gratitude, acknowledging the honour bestowed upon him. He underscored his belief in art’s transformative power for national development, urging the government to collaborate with the creative sector in shaping policies and enhancing public spaces.
He remarked, “The creative industry is vital for cultural preservation and economic empowerment. I am truly honoured to partake in this important mission.”
Secretary General Rowland Goyit shared insights into the strategic priorities of the Council, which focus on artist welfare, advocacy, policy engagement, and international collaboration.
He reaffirmed the Society’s dedication to fostering institutional growth and cultural diplomacy, aiming to elevate Nigerian art on the global stage.
