Arrest and Protests Surrounding VeryDarkMan (VDM)

Verydarkman's (VDM) arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has sparked significant reactions and protests. The controversy began with VDM accompanying his mother to a Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) branch in Abuja to address unauthorized deductions from her account, which were labeled as loan repayments despite her never taking any loans. Following this visit, VDM was reportedly arrested by EFCC officials, triggering widespread concern and demands for his release.
OAP Nedu reacted to the situation with a satirical video dramatizing VDM's alleged abduction by EFCC agents. This video, along with testimonies from VDM's friend Kokopee, described a brutal arrest where VDM was allegedly assaulted in front of his mother and covered with a black cloth. Kokopee claimed that the EFCC is targeting VDM because he has critical information about the agency and alleged attempts to poison him.
The EFCC confirmed VDM's arrest, stating that it was based on petitions from multiple complainants alleging cyberstalking. EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale noted that the arrest was to allow VDM to respond to these allegations and assured that he would be released upon meeting bail conditions. He also mentioned that the case would be taken to court as soon as possible.
In response to VDM's arrest, his brother, Mark Vincent Otse, shared updates about a planned protest, initially to be led by VeryFairMan. He announced a dress code of suits or native attire with briefcases, emphasizing a non-violent approach. However, VeryFairMan later cited a spiritual attack, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.
Protests erupted in Abuja, with supporters demanding VDM's immediate release. Demonstrators gathered at GTB and the EFCC headquarters, holding placards with messages like "Free VeryDarkMan Now." The protesters vowed to take their grievances to the Nigerian Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
Several public figures have weighed in on the arrest. Davido expressed support for VDM, praising the widespread appreciation for his activism. Peter Obi condemned the arrest as a disregard for the rule of law and human rights. Isaac Fayose urged Nigerians to demand VDM's release.
The EFCC has secured a court order to remand VDM pending the conclusion of an investigation into alleged cybercrime offenses. Sources close to the investigation confirmed that the EFCC is preparing to file charges under Nigeria’s Cybercrimes Act. As of Monday, VDM remains in EFCC custody, with his legal representative, Deji Adeyanju, seeking access to him and reviewing possible legal actions.
