APC group accuses Kano govt of taking $6.6m external loan
The APC Patriotic Volunteers has accused the Kano State Government of borrowing $6.6 million without anything to show for it.
Usman Alhaji, the national president of the group, made the allegation at a press conference in Kano on Wednesday.
DAILY NIGERIAN reports that the press conference was organized by the group to assess the performance of the government of New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP in Kano State within its two years in power.
According to Mr Alhaji, the group had it on record that the report from the Debt Management Office, DMO, revealed that the administration of Governor Abba Yusuf had taken the external loan within two years.
The group alleged that despite taking the external loan, the state government has also borrowed huge amount of money elsewhere but nothing to justify the funds.
“We have it on authority from the Debt Management Office (DMO) that between June and December 2023 a total sum of $6.6M (External loans alone) was taken.
“We demand an update from the State Government on how this huge amount was spent,” he said.
Mr Alhaji also challenged the state government to justify its claims of transparency by revealing the current debt portfolio.
The group also alleged that the administration of Mr Yusuf had squandered the ecological fund received from the federal government, amounting to N5.1 billion.
Mr Alhaji said: “In investigation with ecological fund office revealed authoritatively that Kano State Government was the largest recipient of ecological funds to tackle the state’s ecological challenges.
“Between June, 2023 to June, 2024 a total of N2.1 billion was received by the state for environmental hazards and other ecologically related challenges.
“Another N3 billion special release was approved to each state by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in order to tackle all forms of disasters with particular reference to flood-related incidences.
“Unfortunately there is no evidence to show utilisation of the funds on flooding,” he alleged.
The group stated that based on its observations, it had scored the administration of Governor Yusuf too low, adding that the government is run on half-truths, lies and deceit.
“Having carefully assessed and analysed Kano State Government’s performances in the course of NNPP two years administration, APC Patriotic Volunteers finds it expedient to respond to series of half truths, lies and propaganda dished out in the name of achievements.
“There is virtually little to show when compared with the billions of naira accruable through FAAC, IGR and other,” Mr Alhaji said.
