Anambra guber: YPP candidate blames insecurity, tax policies for business decline
Paul Chukwuma, the Young Progressives Party (YPP) candidate in the upcoming Anambra governorship election, has criticised the current state administration’s handling of security and taxation, linking both to the decline of business activities in the state.
Speaking during a campaign visit to Enugwu-Ukwu in Njikoka Local Government Area, Chukwuma said restoring public safety and reviewing business-related tax policies would be top priorities for his administration if elected on November 8.
He argued that the current level of insecurity in Anambra has disrupted the state’s economic rhythm, particularly for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), which he described as the backbone of local commerce. According to him, business owners now close shop early out of fear, with most towns and cities becoming deserted by evening.
Chukwuma also took aim at the Soludo administration’s revenue practices, claiming that small businesses are being overburdened by multiple taxes and levies allegedly enforced by private contractors. He said these practices discourage enterprise and hinder economic growth.
“Business owners are being squeezed on all fronts,” Chukwuma stated. “Between insecurity and the excessive tax demands from numerous government agents, the state is becoming unfriendly to entrepreneurs.”
He also questioned recent infrastructure priorities of the state government, saying funds could have been better directed to initiatives that directly affect livelihoods. “Public funds should be used to stimulate productivity, not on projects that have little relevance to the daily challenges of our people,” he added.
The campaign event, hosted by local entrepreneur Chief Michael Obidi, served as a platform for Chukwuma to engage business owners and restate his commitment to economic revival. Obidi, a vocal supporter of the YPP, noted that the candidate’s understanding of entrepreneurship resonated with many in the local business community.
Deputy governorship candidate Chief Uzuegbuna Okagbue also addressed the gathering, highlighting what he described as a steady decline in household income and business profitability in the state. He said the YPP would work to reverse these trends by focusing on productivity and easing the operating environment for small businesses.
