Alumni seek urgent action on national issues
The University of Benin Alumni Association (UBAA) has called for increased support for students and institutional development to improve the education standard.
The association lauded the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), describing the scheme as a major leap towards inclusion, and called for its immediate consolidation across tertiary institutions to ensure that more students, especially indigent ones, have access to it
It made the call at its council meeting held at the Bon Royal Hotel, Akure, Ondo State. In a firm stance on governance, the council condemned the deteriorating condition of federal roads across the country, describing them as threats to human lives and national productivity.
It called on federal and state governments to urgently address the situation, particularly in areas within their jurisdiction. The association further urged politicians to remain focused on delivering the dividends of democracy, rather than getting distracted by politicking ahead of the 2027 general elections.
It reminded elected leaders of their mandate to serve the people and emphasised the need for visible governance outcomes. The group also expressed concerns over the prevailing security challenges in the country, calling for swift and comprehensive action by relevant authorities to restore law and order.
The council commended UNIBEN’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Edoba Omoregie, praising his leadership for fostering peace, stability, and consistent developmental progress within the institution.
Members also urged continued momentum in steering the institution towards academic excellence. The meeting reinforced the association’s commitment to strengthening education, fostering alumni engagement, and contributing meaningfully to national discourses.
