Tears streamed freely down their cheeks after Father Alois was killed by armed men while on his way to conduct a church service.
The devastating incident, which occurred on Thursday, May 22, was confirmed by Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander Peter Mulinge.
“Priests and nuns mourn the killing of Father Alois Cheruiyot Bett in the Tot area, Elgeyo Marakwet Division in Kenya. Fr. Alois was attacked and killed while walking from a village in the area, where he had gone to lead a community mass,” read the caption on the viral video.
Father Alois’ colleagues were inconsolable upon arriving at the crime scene, struggling to come to terms with the loss of their fellow servant in the vineyard of the Lord.
They gathered in large numbers, offering emotional support to one another in the face of such tragic and heartbreaking news.
Though they tried to hide their sorrow, the pain was overwhelming, and a cloud of grief hung over their heads and the entire area.
The sorrow was so unbearable that some had to pause and pray for strength during this time of trial and heartbreak.
They leaned on one another’s shoulders, wrapping their arms around each other as they mourned the loss of the beloved Father Alois.
Social media users were also devastated by the news, which came just days after another Catholic priest was killed.
