'All of a sudden, boom': Heavy storms cause major damage in Southwest Michigan

Adjacent streets in downtown Martin including Lee Street, where Brooke, Thomas and Vern Newhouse live.

“I thought we were in the clear, then all my family texted me, ‘It’s coming to Martin,” Brooke Newhouse said.

A massive tree fell in the Newhouse’s front yard.

Their neighbors faced the same issue, but with a much larger tree — uprooted and facing their home.

Across from the Newhouses, there was a home for sale. The front of the home was completely destroyed.

The Martin community worked late into the night and into the morning, clearing brush and assessing damages.

“Everybody was just trying to make sure everybody was safe,” Curry said. “You know. Small town.”
