Album Review: Lukas Nelson – American Romance

New country, new romance.

Lukas Nelson is already very accomplished with his solo work and his band, Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real. He has received a Grammy for the movie score A Star Is Born, and has been around for over 15 years, but is still an artist to keep an eye on. Nelson has showcased extreme talent over the years, but continues to grow and expand his sound.

Nelson unleashes his voice with emotion on “Pretty Much,” a love story that spans from the little beginnings to making a family. He explains how he falls in love over and over the whole relationship, creating a beautiful sentiment about not staying still – “Finding I can freely speak my mind with you / You stripped down and jumped into that winter water pool / I pretty much fell in love right then never had a doubt again.” Continuing the theme of love and uplifting joy, “Make You Happy” elevates this feeling even more with the instrumentation. The rhythms grow to a blissful tempo as the strumming creates a beachy tone, creating a feeling of the happiness Nelson plans to bring to his muse.

“Born Runnin’ Outta Time” has an inspiring lyrical dissonance. At first listen, Nelson creates a persona of bliss with fast-moving melodies, but at a closer listen, this song is about yearning and regret -“So tired, hurtin’ myself to get inspired, wish I had a way to get way higher, that didn’t outpace my heart.”

Calmly singing an homage to the state, “Montana” is a soothing piece with harmonic builds and sweet guitar riffs. Blending the beauty of the state and Nelson’s lyrics into the production and feel of this song allows listeners to close their eyes and feel a sense of belonging.

American Romance is an inviting album. The production ranges outside of standard country, as Lukas Nelson leans into new doors and shows creative production.
