The money had been raised by well-wishers to help the family cope with the loss of Ojwang, who died while in police custody.

On Monday, June 23, it was reported that Ojwang's father, Meshack Opiyo, had discovered that about KSh 500k raised through Eric Omondi’s Sisi kwa Sisi initiative had mysteriously vanished from his M-Pesa account.

Ojwang’s uncle, Polycarp Odhiambo, disclosed that the ordeal has only deepened the pain the family is going through.

He explained that a few days earlier, Opiyo had gone to withdraw the funds but was unable to because he lacked an ID.

Upon visiting Safaricom for assistance, he was shocked to learn that even his personal savings of KSh 17,000 were missing.

According to Odhiambo, an account statement revealed the names of individuals who had withdrawn the funds, and in total, over KSh 500,000, was gone.

This incident closely follows another controversy involving the family of Boniface Kariuki, a hawker who was shot dead during anti-tax protests.

His kin also claimed that scammers had disappeared with over KSh 200,000 raised under the same Sisi kwa Sisi initiative.

The news of the missing funds spread rapidly, prompting a flood of reactions on social media.

While some Kenyans sympathised with Ojwang’s grieving family, others questioned the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the money.

Others focused on the emotional toll the situation could have on Ojwang’s kin, who are still preparing for his burial.

A number of Kenyans also pointed out that the family had reportedly received millions more in donations from President William Ruto and Raila Odinga, alongside over KSh 10 million allegedly raised by Eric Omondi.

Here’s what Kenyans had to say:

"No need to cry for small cash and the president chipped in and donated 2 million."

"How?? Na ni paybill and you are all signatories!"

"They were sending the same way reversing."

"Hiyo 3 million is enough for your family, na kwani watu wanareverse?"

"What's 500k and they already have 2m and 1m from Raila and Ruto?"

"Poleni sana, at least we tried. We sympathise with them."

"Looks like Kenyans have been joined by Karma🤔. They now have Karma on their side too."

"But just thank God 500k ndo imeenda."

"“Lord, have mercy on this grieving family.

In related news, Eric reacted after Ojwang's dad accepted a KSh 2 million donation from President Ruto.

The comedian expressed feelings of betrayal, noting that the contribution came from the same government he holds responsible for Ojwang’s death.

He questioned why, despite Kenyans raising millions in support, Ojwang’s father still found it necessary to accept political handouts.
