Albert Ojwang: Inside Late Teacher's Classroom as Students Pay Tribute to Beloved Tutor

Published 11 hours ago3 minute read

Before Albert Ojwang became a household name for all the wrong reasons, he was a devoted teacher, frustrated by the system and the pay that comes with it.

According to his father, the 31-year-old had also started a business while working hard to provide for his young family.

Until now, despite people knowing all about his social media commentary and family, many have yet to get a glimpse of his career as a teacher.

This is after Eric Omondi paid a visit to the late teacher's final place of work, and met someone the late teacher knew well.

The comedian visited Kituma Secondary School in Voi, Taita Taveta, an institution where Albert devoted himself to helping nurture the next generation.

Eric met the school principal, who presented to him a trophy that Albert helped the school win by leading the rugby team to victory.

The CRE and History teacher was also honoured by students in his classroom by placing a portrait of the teacher on the board with the message: 'Rest in peace, Mwalimu Albert Ojwang.'

However, the students were away on half-term, hence not present to share their personal tributes to the late.

Eric also got to see the small office inside the staffroom where Albert sat as he performed his duties as a tutor.

The community mobiliser also dressed in the scout's uniform and raised the flag at half-mast to honour the late teacher at his final school.

He also lit a candle to honour the late and met some of the students from the school, who must have shared some of their experiences with the late.

In his caption, Eric urged teachers and scouts to share short videos with messages of condolences for their late colleague.

"I visited Kituma Secondary School in Voi, Taita Taveta. This is where our brother Albert Ojwang was teaching. Tomorrow, as we lay him to rest, we will celebrate him as a hero. I am calling upon teachers from across the country to send me short videos with messages of condolence and life celebration with the words “Mwalimu Friday” and “Justice For Ojwang”. Also, send me videos of scouts raising the flag in honour of our fallen brother," he wrote.

Here are some of the reactions from netizens:

Earlier, Eric met the family of slain teacher as they held a memorial service at Ridgeway Baptist Church.

In a video, Eric was spotted greeting Meshack Opiyo, Eucabeth Adhiambo and Albert's widow, Nevnina, together with her son.

Eric appeared to have a small chat with Meshack, seemingly seeking an end to recent wrangles over the amount donated towards Ojwang's burial.

He also shared a chat with Nevnina and their son George Myles, a young boy too fragile to understand what happened to his father.
