In the clip, she is seen sharing her grandson’s educational struggles during his burial on Friday, July 7, in Homa Bay county.

Albert’s grandmother was accompanied by a friend to the podium as she delivered her tribute to the young man who died in police custody.

She remained composed as she painfully recalled the challenges Albert faced in his pursuit of education.

“Albert’s grandmother borrowed money to pay his school fees, and she is still repaying the loan,” read the text in a TikTok video.

Albert’s maternal grandmother said she always urged her grandson to focus and work hard in schooland he did not disappoint. He promised to do his best.

After completing high school, Albert called his grandmother from Malindi, Kilifi county.

“He reminded me that I had told him I wanted him to get an education. He told me he was going to the university. I assured him that true to my word, he would go to school and learn. I did all I could so Albert could continue with his education,” she said.

When Albert joined university, his mother, Eucabeth Adhiambo, called her own mother.

Adhiambo expressed her fears that her son might be forced to drop out due to lack of school fees and upkeep money.

“She asked me if there was any way I could help Albert continue his studies. Since I had already made a promise to him, I asked her to send me the necessary documents, which she did,” the grandmother narrated.
“I did my best. There was a young man named Karoli. I approached him and told him that my grandson had been admitted to university, but I had no money. He told me a student could continue with their education if they got support from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB),” she recalled.

That was how Albert managed to proceed with his education and to this day, the grandmother said, she is still repaying the money.

Albert’s father, Meshack, added that the grandmother had made another repayment even on the day of Albert’s burial.

In other remarks, Meshack noted that Albert was the only university graduate in the entire family. He recalled how the family endured many struggles to see him through school.

Meshack said he took on different jobs to ensure Albert could get an education, only for the family’s hopes in him to be tragically cut short.

He was even forced to move to the coastal region in search of work to ensure Albert and his cousin could continue with their studies.

To Meshack, Albert represented hope for the entire family, which is why he never denied him the opportunity to learn.
