Albert Dwumfuor Victorious in GJA Presidential Election

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) successfully concluded its National and Regional Executive Elections on Monday, June 30, 2025, a poll described by the Elections Planning Committee as peaceful and credible. Over 700 journalists in good standing participated in the nationwide exercise to elect new national and regional officers. A total of 12 candidates contested for six national executive positions, while 49 others vied for regional roles. The newly elected executives are set to serve a three-year term, with expectations to drive critical reforms and advocacy efforts within the evolving media landscape.

Incumbent President, Mr. Albert Dwumfour, secured a resounding victory to retain his position for another term. He polled 445 votes, representing 64.49% of the total votes cast, effectively trouncing his sole contender, Mr. Charles Yao Mawusi, who garnered 245 votes, representing 35.51%. Mr. Dwumfour had campaigned on his record from his previous term, a message that clearly resonated with the Association's members. His re-election marks a decisive mandate from GJA members across the country.

In other key national executive positions, Madam Rebecca Ekpe, the Editor of GBConline, was elected as the new Vice President of the Association. She secured 414 votes, beating Mary Mensah of the Graphic Communications Group Ltd, who received 272 votes. Madam Ekpe transitions to this role from her previous position as Public Affairs Officer.

The General Secretary position was also filled by Dominic Hlodzi from GBC, who polled 443 votes against Akwasi Agyeman from the Multimedia Group Limited, who secured 247 votes. Hlodzi moves into this role from having previously served as the Organising Secretary.

Further national positions saw Suleiman Mustapha from Graphic Communications Group Ltd elected as the new Organising Secretary with 365 votes, overcoming Maxwell Kudekor who had 321 votes. Zadok Kwame Gyesi secured the Public Affairs Officer role with 431 votes, beating Caesar Abagali who recorded 253 votes.

For the Treasurer position, Bertha Badu-Agyei from the Ghana News Agency (GNA) was elected, securing 401 votes against Theodora A. Amedetor Yakanu from GBC, who obtained 287 votes. Her victory ensures that the Treasurer position continues to be a stronghold for staff from the Ghana News Agency, a trend that has persisted for over 20 years.

The Chairman of the Elections Planning Committee, Mr. Peter Martey Agbeko, expressed profound gratitude to all stakeholders for the successful conclusion of the polls. He congratulated the newly elected candidates, emphasizing that their victory is a call to service, and urged those who were not successful to remain involved, stressing that the GJA needs their voice and commitment. Mr. Agbeko concluded by appealing for unity within the Association: “The elections are over. Let us now close ranks, build bridges, and move forward in unity under the leadership of our new executives.”
