An Air India flight bound for London crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The State Police Control Room has confirmed the incident.
The aircraft—Air India AI 171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner—was carrying 242 passengers, according to news agency ANI. The flight was en route to London Gatwick when it crashed just outside the airport perimeter.
The incident took place near the Meghaninagar area, close to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA). Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik initially said, “A plane crashed in the Meghaninagar area near the airport. It is not yet clear what type of plane it was.” Authorities have now confirmed it was Air India AI 171.

As a result of the crash, SVPIA has suspended all flight operations until further notice. In a statement, an airport spokesperson said, “Flight AI 171 from Ahmedabad to London, Gatwick, earlier today, was involved in a crash shortly after takeoff, outside the airport. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport is currently not operational. All flight operations are temporarily suspended until further notice. Passengers are advised to check with their respective airlines for the latest updates before proceeding to the airport. We request your cooperation and patience as authorities manage this evolving situation.”
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu posted on X (formerly Twitter), expressing grief and confirming that rescue and emergency response teams have been mobilised.

There is no official word yet on casualties or survivors. Emergency services have been deployed to the crash site, and rescue operations are ongoing.
According to NDTV, hospitals across the city have been put on high alert, with 1,200 beds made available to treat potential casualties. The crash occurred shortly after takeoff.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Authorities are expected to hold a press briefing shortly.
