Ahmed Musa: African teams' performances at Club World Cup show NPFL needs overhauling | TheCable

Ahmed Musa played the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season with Kano Pillars

In a tweet on Saturday, Musa was reacting to the performances of African teams at the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup in the US.

Four clubs from the continent are currently competing at the tournament.

The teams are Wydad Casablanca of Morocco, South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns, Al Ahly of Egypt and Tunisia’s Esperance.

Al Ahly drew Lionel Messi-backed Inter Miami in the competition opener. Mamelodi Sundowns defeated Ulsan FC from South Korea in their first game while Esperance were 1-0 winners over Los Angeles FC on Friday.

Musa said comparing the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) clubs with the African teams at the Club World Cup calls for a “sober reflection”.

The 32-year-old, who was with Kano Pillars last season, puzzled if Nigerian clubs can compete at such level despite the “abundance of talent and potential from the grassroots to the elite level”.

He then called for a “review of the organisation of the league, clubs’ structure, and funding”.

“We need to set out new policies and drive the reforms,” he writes.

“We must collectively decide to make our football work which will ensure that our clubs compete at the continental and world level.

“What about the referees and officiating? Other African countries are producing referees for CAF and FIFA tournaments, but what do we have here?”

Musa has been vocal about the state of Nigeria leagues.

In October, he was slammed with a N2 million fine by the NPFL board for criticising match officials and the league broadly.
