After heavy rain on Sat, city on yellow alert; orange for Thane

Mumbai: Amid an orange alert issued by the IMD for Saturday for Mumbai and Thane, heavy and intense rain spells accompanied by thunder and lightning were reported in many places of the city like Fort, Mulund, Bhandup, Powai, Dahisar as well as adjoining areas like Thane, Kalyan, Dombivli and parts of Navi Mumbai.Overcast skies had persisted throughout the day, and the isolated heavy showers were reported, starting Saturday evening. A moderate to heavy rain warning remains in place for the city until June 18, according to the district forecast.Mumbai specifically remains under a yellow alert for June 15-16, indicating heavy rains at isolated places. Thane, meanwhile, is placed under an orange alert for June 15 and a yellow alert for June 16. "Most areas in South Konkan–Goa received rain on June 13. Strong winds were reported from several locations, including 48kmph in Alibaug (North Konkan), 52kmph in Devgad (South Konkan–Goa), 70kmph in Dhule (North Madhya Maharashtra), 44kmph in Satara (South Madhya Maharashtra), and 67kmph in Sambhajinagar (Marathwada)," said IMD. Mumbai comes under North Konkan.Outlining the reasons on why rainfall activity over Maharashtra is expected to continue from June 14 to June 18, 2025, the weather bureau said, "The upper air cyclonic circulation over northwest Rajasthan has now shifted to west Rajasthan A trough associated with this system runs from west Rajasthan and adjoining Pakistan to north Madhya Maharashtra, passing through the Gujarat region, also at about 1.5km above mean sea level.

An upper air cyclonic circulation, previously over north interior Karnataka and adjoining Telangana and Rayalaseema, now lies over Marathwada and nearby areas. This system extends up to 5.8km above mean sea level and tilts southwestward with height. A trough from this circulation stretches from Marathwada to coastal Andhra Pradesh across Telangana, between 3.1 and 5.8 km above mean sea level," said the IMD in its official press release.Fishermen off North Konkan coast are advised not to venture into sea between June 14-18 for their safety. tnn
