Adiele cries for help two weeks after Chukwu, Bassey's demise
Barely two weeks after the death of 1980 African Cup of Nations stars, Christian Chukwu, and Charles Bassey, another member of the team, David Adiele, has raised a distress call.
According to some stakeholders, Adiele, a defender in the team led by Chukwu to Nigeria’s first continental trophy, is currently facing the toughest battle of his life, stricken by illness, neglected and languishing in his hometown, Umuokwara Okwudor, Njaba LGA, Imo State.
One of his associates, Sunny Black Ogbeka, urged the federal government, through the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), to rescue the former Bendel Insurance and Spartans of Owerri star, who spent his youth defending the colours of the country.
In a statement made available to The Guardian, Ogbeka said Adiele needs immediate medical support and financial assistance. He called for a sustainable welfare structure for ex-internationals who gave their all to elevate the country’s pride.
