Adam Scott's Mark Scout faces a difficult decision in Severance Season 2
Apple TV+

is a versatile actor who has cultivated a highly successful television and film career. He charmed audiences as Ben Wyatt on NBC's Parks and Rec and now gives a riveting performance on Apple+ as Lumon employee Mark Scout on Severance. His credits include comedic works such as Party Down and The Good Place, as well as dramatic projects including the HBO series Big Little Lies and the Martin Scorsese Howard Hughes biopic The Aviator.

If Scott has proven one thing, it's that he has range. In addition to all the dramas and comedies to his name, the actor has also starred in his fair share of and films. The 52-year-old actor has been working in Hollywood since the early 1990s, and sci-fi and horror have remained staples across his career. His first horror movie came out in 1996, and his most recent project in the genre was released in 2025.

Here's every sci-fi and horror movie Adam Scott has ever appeared in, ranked.

Adam Scott and SMG in The Return
Rogue Pictures

Written by Adam Sussman (12 Monkeys) and directed by Asif Kapadia (2073), The Return is a supernatural horror movie that underwhelmed audiences in 2005. Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Sarah Michelle Gellar stars as Joanna Mills, a trucking company representative experiencing gruesome visions, dreaming about a murder that happened 15 years ago. Scott plays Joanna's terrible ex-boyfriend, who stalks her throughout the film.

The Return didn't perform particularly well at the box office and didn't really connect with audiences. IMDB only gives it 4.7 out of 10 stars. Critics give the film a pretty low 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences giving it a 32% rating. Scott has a talent for playing lovable and loathsome alike characters, but there wasn't a ton to work with on this one.

Piranha 3D is one of those movies where everything about it is so absurd that viewers seem to have a good time. It is based on a 1978 film of the same name. An underwater tremor sets free a bunch of man-eating fish during spring break, and all hell breaks loose. Elisabeth Shue (The Boys), Steven R. McQueen (The Vampire Diaries), and Jerry O'Connell (Stand by Me) star with appearances by Richard Dreyfuss (Jaws), Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future), and Eli Roth (Inglourious Basterds). Scott plays Novak, a seismologist diver who joins up with Sheriff Julie Forester (Shue) as she tries to save naive party-goers from being torn to shreds.

Piranha 3D goes hard and doesn't take itself too seriously, which appealed widely to critics. It has a 75% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but only a 45% rating from audiences. IMDB gives it 5.5 out of 10 stars. Most viewers see it more as a very violent comedy than a horror movie. The film "is trying so hard for the laughs and the allusions amid all the gore, and endless bloodbath of bare naked ladies, that it completely forgets to frighten anyone," writes Betsy Sharkey for the Los Angeles Times. Nonetheless, Piranha 3D was nominated for one MTV Movie award and six Scream Awards, winning for Most Memorable Mutilation.

Adam Scott's 5 Best Performances, Ranked

The Critics Choice Award nominee's latest effort, Severance, was renewed for a second season. Here are Adam Scott's other top-notch roles to date.

Based on the Marvel comics character, Madame Web is the origin story of Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson), a paramedic with clairvoyant capabilities trying to save three future Spider-Women played by Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), and Celeste O'Connor (Freaky). Scott plays Cassandra's friend and co-worker Ben Parker. If the character's name rings a bell, that's because Ben Parker is the uncle who goes on to raise Peter Parker (aka Spider-Man). In Madame Web, Ben's sister, Mary (Emma Roberts), is pregnant with Peter.

Madame Web didn't do too well at the Box Office and received a harsh critical response, though audience reviews remain mixed. The film has a 53% rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes but only an 11% rating from critics. IMDB gives Madame Web 4 out of 10 stars. The movie received six Razzie Award nominations, winning for Worst Actress and Worst Screenplay. It was somehow nominated for Best Comic Book Film and Worst Film of the Year by the Hawaii Film Critics Society in the same year.

Hot Tub Time Machine's sequel sees the return of Corddry, Robinson, and Duke as they go back in time to stop one of them from being murdered, only to be propelled forward into the future. Scott steps in this time to round out the foursome as Adam Yates Stedmeyer, son of John Cusack's character in the first film.

Hot Tub Time Machine 2 received mixed reviews. It holds 5 out of 10 stars on IMDB and has a 14% rating from critics and a 26% rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Even so, there are still plenty of positive reviews across the internet saying the film is much more fun than anyone gives it credit for being. Hot Tub Time Machine 2 was nominated for two Razzie Awards but has been praised overall for having a mostly likable cast. Legendary critic Roger Ebert gave it 3 out of 4 stars, noting that the film "wants nothing more than to be a screwball farce" and "succeeds beyond any expectations suggested by the title."

7 Biggest Questions We Have After the 'Severance' Season 2 Finale

Much like season 1, 'Severance' season 2 had an explosive finale. Some questions were answered, but many remain.

Scott's first sci-fi movie and his first horror movie came in the form of Hellraiser: Bloodline, the fourth installment in the Hellraiser franchise. Doug Bradley stars as Pinhead (a role he would play eight times) alongside Brucey Ramsay (Behind the Candelabra) and Valentina Vargas (The Four Altars).

Scott plays Jacques, assistant to wealthy aristocrat Duc de L'Isle (Mickey Cottrell). Together, L'Isle and Jacques summon the Cenobite, Angelique (Vargas). When Jacques and Angelique betray L'Isle, toymaker Philip Lemarchand invents something called the Elysium Configuration to kill demons and, in doing so, receives a curse on his entire bloodline.

Hellraiser: Bloodline was the last Hellraiser film to have a theatrical release. It has 5.1 out of 10 stars on IMDB. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes afford it a 25% rating while audiences give it a 36% rating. Many fans of the franchise admit that it is not a perfect film, but enjoy this installment anyway for its inventive and campier nature. In 1996, Bradley won Best Actor at Fantafestival for his performance as the iconic Pinhead. The movie also received a Fangoria Chainsaw Award nomination for Best Makeup FX.

After Parks and Rec but before Severance, Scott starred in the Christmas horror movie Krampus. Inspired by German folklore, the movie stars Emjay Anthony (Bad Moms) as Max Engel, who summons the demon Krampus to his family's home after experiencing a disappointing Christmas. Krampus comes to punish those who have lost the Christmas spirit, and now the Engel family is forced to fight for their survival. Scott plays Max's father, Tom, with Toni Collette (Hereditary) as his mother, Sarah. The movie is directed by Michael Dougherty, the writer-director behind the 2007 Halloween cult classic, Trick ‘r Treat.

Krampus did pretty well at the box office, grossing $61,548,707 after being made on a budget of $15,000,000. It holds a 6.2 out of 10 rating on IMDB, and critics on Rotten Tomatoes give the film a 66% score (with audiences giving it 52%). The movie is widely considered to be a decent Christmas-themed horror film, bringing the figure of Krampus further into public consciousness. Krampus was nominated for four Fangoria Chainsaw Awards, winning for Best Makeup/Creature FX.

The Monkey is Scott's latest horror project to date. Written and directed by Osgood Perkins (Longlegs), The Monkey is based on a 1980 Stephen King short story about a cursed toy. In the film, Theo James (The White Lotus) stars as Hal and Bill Shelburn, identical twin brothers who cannot seem to get rid of a menacing monkey toy that brings death and chaos wherever it goes. Scott briefly appears as Captain Petey Shelburn, the original owner of the monkey and father to Hal and Bill. He disappears shortly after he tries to get rid of the cursed monkey, and eventually the brothers find the toy in their attic.

The Monkey has a lot of star power behind it. Osgood Perkins is currently one of the biggest directors in horror, and Stephen King stories never go out of style. On Rotten Tomatoes, The Monkey has a 78% rating from critics, most of whom appreciate Perkins's style, while others find the tone to be somewhat uneven and, at times, too comedic for the subject matter. The movie has 6 out of 10 stars on IMDB.

"You've never seen anything like THE MONKEY," King wrote on Threads in January, ahead of the film's release. "It's batshit insane. As someone who has indulged in batshittery from time to time, I say that with admiration."

Scott's comedic and horror talents really shine in Little Evil. He stars in the film as a man named Gary who has married a single mother, Samantha (Evangeline Lilly). The only problem? Samantha's son, Lucas (Owen Atlas), might just be the Antichrist. Written and directed by Eli Craig (Tucker & Dale vs. Evil), Little Evil features appearances by Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption), Bridget Everett (Somebody Somewhere), and Craig's mother, Academy Award winner Sally Field (Norma Rae).

Little Evil holds an impressive 92% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but only a 47% rating from audiences. It has 5.7 out of 10 stars on IMDB. Writing for Decider, Meghan O'Keefe calls it "a surprisingly sweet, rather — dare I say it? — cute, horror comedy that injects heart into the 'spawn of Satan' genre." Little Evil might not be the scariest movie Scott has ever starred in, but it is perhaps one of the most endearing.

Shortly after Hellraiser: Bloodline, Scott joined the cast of Star Trek: First Contact. This is the eighth Star Trek film in all and the second one based on the television series, Star Trek: The Next Generation. Patrick Stewart stars as captain of the USS Enterprise-E, Jean-Luc Picard, with a cast that includes Jonathan Frakes (Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction), Brent Spiner (The Aviator), and LeVar Burton (Roots), among others. Scott plays a conn officer on the USS Defiant spaceship during the film's opening scene. He reports to Worf (Michael Dorn), the commander of the USS Defiant, who has his own history with Jean-Luc Picard.

Star Trek: First Contact is considered a classic. It has 7.6 out of 10 stars on IMDB. It holds a 93% rating from critics and an 89% rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie was nominated for Best Makeup at the 1997 Academy Awards and earned 10 Saturn Award nominations, winning in three categories.
