Abia government slams Ikpeazu over 'premature' campaigns, 'inciting' comments | TheCable

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Okey Kanu, Abia state information commissioner, said Ikpeazu recently hosted a politically charged gathering at his Umuobiakwa residence in Obingwa LGA, where he allegedly urged attendees to “deliver their booths and units” in future elections.

Kanu said while Ikpeazu did not make a formal declaration of political ambition, his remarks at the meeting amounted to a breach of electoral regulations as set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“He went further to make a veiled comment about his expertise in election rigging, forgetting that it failed him in the 2023 senatorial race where he placed a distant third,” the statement reads.

The commissioner said the comments, coming at a time when campaigns are yet to be officially permitted, amount to a violation of INEC guidelines and could provoke political tension in the state.

“It is preposterous that Dr Ikpeazu chose to exploit this illegal platform not only to mobilise politically but also to launch a vicious tirade of misinformation and attacks against the current administration,” Kanu said.

“Such reckless commentary not only disrespects the office he once held but also has the dangerous potential of inciting unrest and destabilising the peace Abians currently enjoy.”

He stressed that while the government recognises Ikpeazu’s constitutional right to free speech and association, such freedoms must be exercised responsibly and within the limits of the law.

Kanu said the Alex Otti-led administration remains focused on rebuilding Abia and restoring public trust, warning that it would not condone any attempt to derail progress through “premature politicking and provocation”.

“At a time when every well-meaning Abian is called to support the government in delivering the dividends of democracy, it is regrettable that Dr Ikpeazu and his political allies have chosen the path of provocation and incitement,” he said.

He added that the state government is aware of the displeasure expressed by many residents over the development and urged citizens to remain calm and law-abiding.

“While the government frowns at this irresponsible behaviour by the former governor and his co-travellers, we want to issue a final warning that the ban on campaigns has not been lifted and anyone campaigning now is breaking the law and trying to heat up the polity,” he said.

“Government will not sit idly by and allow that to happen.”

Kanu said the administration would continue to protect the rights of citizens while deploying all legal means to safeguard the peace and stability of Abia.
