AAC Party Condemns Attack On National Chairman Sowore During Lagos Marathon, Demands Justice | Sahara Reporters
The thugs had also attacked journalists covering the Lagos City Marathon, injuring many of their victims, and destroying their cameras and other gadgets.
The African Action Congress (AAC) Federal Capital Territory, FCT Chapter, has condemned an attack on its National Chairman, Omoyele Sowore, allegedly carried out by thugs linked to the organisers of the Lagos Marathon 2025, Access Bank, and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
SaharaReporters had reported that Sowore, the convener of #RevolutionNow Movement, was brutally attacked by the APC thugs alongside his crew members while participating in the marathon.
The thugs had also attacked journalists covering the Lagos City Marathon, injuring many of their victims, and destroying their cameras and other gadgets.
In a video of the attack streamed live on Facebook by SaharaReporters, the thugs could be seen physically assaulting Sowore, his crew members and the journalists.
However, in a press statement signed by the AAC FCT Chairman, Agena Robert Ande, on Monday, the party described the attack as a "brazen act of violence" and accused the APC of attempting to silence opposition voices through intimidation.
The AAC demanded an official apology from the marathon organisers, Access Bank, and the APC.
The party also called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those involved in the attack, stating that video evidence exists showing the perpetrators in action.
Additionally, the party demanded the return of a media camera seized from Sowore’s media team during the incident.
The statement reaffirmed the AAC’s commitment to defending the rights of Nigerians and fighting against political oppression.
It also called on Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to break his silence on the matter, warning that his failure to act could be seen as complicity.
The statement reads in part; "It is highly condemable to see a vicious attack on our National Chairman by thugs allegedly sponsored by the organisers of the Lagos Marathon 2025, Access Bank, and the All Progressives Congress (APC). This brazen act of violence is a clear indication of the APC's desperation to silence opposition voices. We condemn this in totality!
"We demand an immediate apology from the organisers of the Lagos Marathon 2025, Access Bank, and the APC for this heinous act. Furthermore, we insist that those caught on camera perpetrating this violence be arrested and brought to book. This attack was politically motivated, and we will not stand idly by while our leaders are intimidated and assaulted. WE DEMAND ALSO IMMEDIATE RETURN OF SOWORE'S MEDIA TEAM CAMERA.
"The AAC seizes this medium to restate its commitment to stay the course and to assure the good people of Nigeria that help is on the way. Our party remains resolute in its pursuit of a better Nigeria, where the rights of all citizens are respected and protected.
"We call on all well-meaning Nigerians to join us in condemning this attack and demanding justice for our National Chairman. We urge the Lagos State Governor to break his silence on this matter, as his inaction is tantamount to complicity.
"The AAC will continue to stand strong against oppression and fight for a better Nigeria. We will not be deterred by violence and intimidation."
