One of Pixar's earliest movies, A Bug's Life, has a bizarre spiritual sequel that is currently climbing the viewership charts on Disney+.

Hereditary also proved to be a box-office success for A24, making $87.8 million against its meager $10 million budget. The film was A24's highest-grossing film at the time of its release, a record it held until Everything Everywhere All at Once premiered in 2022. Aster's work on Hereditary has been acclaimed for its incredible blend of atmospheric horror mixed with the complex dynamics revolving around grief and family relationships. Filming for the movie involved the use of custom-built sets on a sound stage, intended to give the film a dollhouse aesthetic, mimicking Collette's character's work as a miniature artist.

As Hereditary climbs the charts in Netflix's U.S. Top 10, it is now the highest ranking horror film on the streamer; other movies in the Top 10 include the Netflix originals Back in Action and Ad Vitam (#1 and #2 respectively), Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2 (#4, #3), The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (#5), Hotel Transylvania 2 (#6), Rush Hour (#7), The Secret Life of Pets (#9), and The Boss Baby (#10).

Despite being no stranger to horror-adjacent films like the psychological thriller The Sixth Sense and the horror comedy Krampus, Toni Collette revealed that she was initially reluctant to work on a horror film like Hereditary. Speaking in an interview with The Verge, she revealed that it was Aster's approach to creating an existential horror film that got her on board for the project.

"You just don’t expect a film like this to come out of that guy," she said. "He just really understood the dynamics in the family, has such an understanding of what it is to be human, what it is to experience loss."

Aster's next film, also scheduled to be distributed by A24, will be the contemporary Western black comedy, Eddington, starring Phoenix with Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, Luke Grimes, Austin Butler and more. A release date for Eddington has not been revealed at this time.

Hereditary is now streaming on Netflix.
