90th and Hampton shooting, Milwaukee man accused of reckless homicide

Published 1 month ago2 minute read

- A Milwaukee man is accused of reckless homicide for a Jan. 14 shooting on the city's north side. Prosecutors said the victim was shot "at point blank range."

In addition to first-degree reckless homicide, 22-year-old Quayvonne Johnson is charged with possession of a firearm by a felon in the case.

A criminal complaint states the victim, 23-year-old Dequon Garrett, was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators found two handguns near Garrett's feet and two bullet casings near his body.

Investigators found cellphone video that captured the shooting. Prosecutors said it showed five people – including Garrett – standing near where the victim's body was later found. Garrett appeared to be arguing with someone; however, the video "unequivocally" showed that a different person shot Garrett.

The complaint states the video, which lasted roughly 31 seconds, showed Garrett was shot once "at point blank range" before he fell to the ground. Everyone but Garrett and the shooter then ran off. The shooter then "calmly" walked up to Garrett's body and fired a second shot before walking away.

After the first shot, court filings said a voice in the video was heard yelling "Quay! No!" After the second shot, a voice yelled "Quay! Quay!" Investigators said it was "plainly obvious" from the video who shot Garrett.

Johnson was arrested the next day. Prosecutors said he initially claimed to not know why he was in custody, but heard there was a "dead body" near 90th and Hampton. Investigators said Johnson later told them Garrett had two guns and "smacked" one of Johnson's family members during an argument. He ultimately admitted that he fired two shots.

Court records show Johnson is due in court for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 29. His bond was set at $250,000 after an initial court appearance earlier this month.
