LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. (WACH) — According to South Carolina Emergency Management, lightning struck eight adults and 12 children at the Dominion Beach Park at Dreher Shoals Dam in Lexington Tuesday afternoon.

Lexington County Fire Service, Irmo Fire District, Lexington County EMS, and the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department responded around 5:00 p.m.

Based on source reports and data from the lightning detection network, the strike appears to have been a single bolt, according to the National Weather Service in Columbia.

In total, 20 people were injured, two were treated for their injuries on the scene, while 18 were taken to a local hospital.

Officials say all patients are expected to recover.

Dominion Beach Park is expected to reopen on Wednesday following assessments and clearance from authorities.
