7 Future-Classic Fashion Items That Everyone Is Buying Second-Hand | British Vogue

Published 2 weeks ago4 minute read

Shopping vintage has never been easier, thanks to the rise of multiple resale sites and countless online dealers. But buying second-hand doesn’t mean you have to go back the 20 years required for an item to be considered truly vintage. In fact, shoppers are increasingly turning to the resale market to buy new-season sold-out items that they failed to get their hands on, or gently worn cult pieces for a more affordable price.

Think of it as future vintage: items that are likely to remain in collectors’ archives, decades on. “Anything that’s part of the zeitgeist now, that’s having a moment, is going to be desirable,” Julie Ann Clauss, professional archivist and founder of The Wardrobe, previously told Vogue.

In fact, Vestiaire Collective’s recent Resale Buying Guide found that brands like Miu Miu, The Row, Alaïa and Loewe are surging in popularity on the resale market (it’s worth noting that all four brands are also in the Lyst Index’s top 10 brands of 2025 so far). “These labels have seen a significant rise in average resale value over the past five years,” Sophie Hersan, Vestiaire’s co-founder and fashion director, says. “Among the standout pieces contributing to this growth are The Row’s Margaux Bag, Alaïa’s embellished ballet flats and Loewe’s Puzzle Bag. We’re seeing that more and more customers are looking for pieces that never go out of style – prioritising longevity over newness. Many of these items, often less than 10 years old, are quickly becoming cult favourites.”

Below, see the modern classics that everyone is buying second-hand.

There’s a reason that The Row’s Margaux bag has sold out countless times since it first launched in 2018. It’s the ultimate quiet luxury item, with the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Kendall Jenner and Zoë Kravitz all being fans. Thanks to its cult status, even on the resale market, the Margaux will set you back at least £2,000.

Endlessly popular at the Vogue office, Alaïa’s ballet flats – both the mesh and embellished versions – are coming back out again this spring. Currently sold out in your size? Look to your favourite resale sites to get your hands on a pair.

Now that Jonathan Anderson has taken his final bow for Loewe, expect to see the designer’s archival pieces spiking in popularity. Unsurprisingly, the Puzzle bag – which originally launched in 2014, and was the brand’s first new bag since the ’80s – is in high-demand, with Vestiaire Collective reporting a 43 per cent increase in sales over the past 12 months alone. Best of all? You can buy it second-hand for around half the RRP.

Similarly, as Matthieu Blazy prepares to unveil his debut show at Chanel, his Bottega Veneta stock is also on the up. While his trompe l’oeil plaid shirt and jeans – actually made from leather – will forever be remembered, the Andiamo bag is the everyday investment piece that will stand the test of time.

Ever since I saw Vogue’s Madeline Fass wearing Khaite’s studded leather jacket (named the Ziggy), it’s been high on my wishlist. While it might not be available to buy new anymore, make sure you set up your alerts if you want to snap one up second-hand.

Since launching last year, the Prada Buckle bag is well on its way to cult status, with the likes of Dua Lipa, Alexa Chung and Chloë Sevigny all spotted with the accessory. When you take into account the fact that Prada’s resale value has gone up 11 per cent in the past year on Vestiaire Collective, consider it a foolproof investment for the future.

As the weather heats up, naturally our attention is turning to our summer footwear. While Hermès’s Oran sandals have surged in popularity in recent years, despite being around since 1997, we’ve got an eye on the Chypre style that launched in 2021. Comfortable, yet chic, the style comes Meghan Markle-approved.
