Ecuador has revised its immigration policy, ending visa-free airport transits for passport holders from 45 countries, including Nigeria and Ghana.

The new rule, confirmed by Ecuadorian immigration authorities and reported by TravelBiz, took effect immediately and affects travellers using Ecuador as a layover point. Below are key details about the policy shift.

The new requirement affects travellers from countries across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. Among the countries listed are Nigeria, Ghana, India, Bangladesh, Egypt, the Philippines, Afghanistan, Venezuela, and China. Nationals of these countries must now apply for a Visa de Transeúnte before boarding flights transiting through Ecuador.

Previously, travellers from visa-required countries were permitted to pass through Ecuadorian airports during layovers without needing a visa, provided they remained in the international transit zone. That exemption has now been revoked.

Affected travellers must apply for the Ecuadorian transit visa before travel. Required documents include a valid passport with at least six months of validity, proof of onward travel, completed application forms, passport photographs, and evidence of sufficient financial means.

According to Ecuadorian authorities, applicants may need to attend an in-person interview at the nearest Ecuadorian embassy or consulate. The process varies depending on consular jurisdiction. Applications can be made online or in person, depending on location.

The Visa de Transeúnte is specifically designed for short-term airport layovers and is generally valid for 24 to 72 hours. Travellers must hold the visa even if they do not plan to exit the airport or pass through Ecuadorian immigration.

The move is part of a broader tightening of immigration controls by several countries in response to increased migration and regional security concerns. Ecuador’s decision follows similar shifts in visa regimes globally, aimed at limiting irregular migration through transit routes.

Ecuadorian officials say the measure is intended to improve border control and strengthen oversight of people entering the country through international airports. No formal exemptions have been announced as of the time of this report.
