As any summer fashion-lover will attest, 2025 has been a bumper year for warm-weather trends. From boho skirts to lace slip skirts, this season’s go-to staples offer a sunny nostalgia that lends themselves to long summer evenings, alfresco socialising and, let’s face it, provides escapism from the ever-present temptation to doom-scroll.

So it’s unsurprising, really, that fashion folks – including countless Vogue editors – are sourcing many of the season’s key silhouettes second-hand, whether it’s browsing resale apps or riffling through packed rails in IRL stores. “Everything having a moment right now – from boho, fringing, metallics, micro minis, suede, lade, butter yellow, suiting etc – has already existed before. Buying pre-loved means you won’t be wearing the same thing as everyone else, but you can still keep up with the fleeting trends in a more individual way,” explains eBay’s style director, Amy Bannerman. “Pre-loved luxury items update and add value to my summer wardrobe – Marni or Prada sandals, a Loewe shirtdress, or a Balenciaga City bag are all brilliant summer investments and will stand the test of time, too.”

So, what’s on our second-hand wishlist for summer 2025? The cotton nightie is one of our top choices for sourcing vintage, with many new iterations taking direct inspiration from Edwardian and Victorian slips and nightgowns. Source yourself an original by using search terms such as “vintage Edwardian cotton nightie” or “vintage broderie anglaise nightie”, but keep an eye on those measurements as true vintage sizing can be quite variable.

It will be no surprise that the longline denim short – a skateboard-inspired staple that has taken over the UK’s city streets this year – has also made our edit. To find your perfect fit, consider looking in both men’s and women’s sections – for example, if you prefer a more low-slung fit, you may find more options in men’s – but remember you can create your own DIY version by chopping and fraying an old pair of baggy jeans.

“I love a 100 per cent cotton vintage nightie – they’re always amazing quality and have just the right level of sheerness to feel a little bit saucy but still elegant and chic. I love wearing them with black underwear – it makes the whole thing feel quite Carrie Bradshaw, and less ‘time for bed’. Satiny ’80s lingerie is also such great quality and very of-the-moment after Stella McCartney’s show. Peak inspiration is Alexa Chung in that incredible Chloé lingerie-inspired playsuit she wore to the Vogue BAFTAs party – it’s easy to recreate the look with vintage lingerie.”

“Getting the fit right on denim shorts is as tricky as finding the right jeans. My tip is to find a pre-loved pair of your favourite jeans and chop them into Bermudas – size up for a lower rise. That way, you already know they’ll fit. If you don’t want a raw hem, get them finished at a local seamster or use a service like Sojo. Vintage Levi’s are my go-to – they hug your bum in the right way and give that peachy look instead of being too baggy and swamping your shape.”

“Let’s be honest: those ‘vintage-style’ tees on the high street are never as cool as the real thing. I love how random the wording can be on a proper vintage tee and they make brilliant gifts too. I love a long-sleeve vintage surf tee styled with something elevated like a fancy metallic skirt or men’s suit trousers. eBay is a goldmine for vintage baby and slogan tees – just filter by ‘pre-loved’ and your preferred size (I always wear a men’s L or XL) and you’ll be amazed by what you can find!”

“I love a pair of men’s swim shorts in summer – they’re the perfect length and never sheer. I’ve got my eye on a vintage pair of Burberry ’90s Nova check ones – Burberry is having such a cool moment again, which has put it back on my radar. Swimwear and accessories are a great way to buy into a luxury brand and they’re practical, too. I also love giant vintage American football tops as dresses – the mesh is breathable and they’re surprisingly flattering. And don’t forget vintage Adidas towelling running shorts – we have some in the eBay archive and they are the perfect shape – high-waisted, flattering. Plus, Adidas just makes everything cooler, right?”

“The Chloé Paddington is the boho bag and it’s having a major comeback. On eBay, global searches for it have jumped by 628 per cent year-on-year. I love the idea of styling it with a contrasting outfit, something sporty, or a modern look so you don’t look like you’re doing Kate Moss cosplay.”

“One of the best things about eBay is the extensive search tools – for example you’re able to filter by fabric meaning that finding a particular category like lace is really simple. This way you’ll be able to find surprising things you didn’t realise existed! Look for vintage cotton lace pieces rather than more synthetic counterparts. Right now, we’re hunting for vintage Victorian cotton bloomers – they’re having a moment again. I love styling them with a slouchy vintage Breton top.”
