5 potential No. 1 NHL draft picks for the Islanders in 2025

Published 1 week ago2 minute read

The Islanders won Monday night’s NHL Draft Lottery and have the first overall selection on June 27 in Los Angeles.

Here are scouting reports on five of the top prospects:

The lefthanded playmaker had 35 goals and 49 assists in 56 regular-season games in his second QMJHL season. He’s not shy of shooting but his shot still needs development. He is a strong skater capable at both ends of the ice.

Hagens, from Hauppauge, had 11 goals and 26 assists in 37 games in his first collegiate season after two seasons with the U.S. National Development Team. The lefthanded shot is a gifted playmaker who is quick on the rush with strong edge work in his skating and has been noted for his high hockey IQ.

The righthanded shot had 37 goals and 61 assists in 57 regular-season games for Brampton, his third OHL squad. He’s known for his strong shooting ability and puck control as he excels in tight spaces. His open-ice speed and mobility will need development.

The lefthanded shot had 62 goals and 72 assists in 65 regular-season games, scoring 50 goals in 50 games. He plays a complete, two-way game with tremendous on-ice awareness and anticipation coupled with strong skating and playmaking abilities. He could be the most NHL-ready player in the draft.

An illness and a broken collarbone limited the lefthanded Schaefer, who does not turn 18 until September, to seven goals and 15 assists in 17 games. Still, he’s jumped to the top of most draft boards as a projected No. 1 defenseman with strong two-way skills. He is an excellent and elusive puck transporter.
