2027: Don't Waste Your Energy Contesting, Obinna Ejianya Counsels Peter Obi - Independent Newspaper Nigeria
Mr Obinna Ejianya, the Australian-based Nigerian publisher of 9News Nigeria and CEO of Nine Communications Ltd, has spoken out about the newly formed African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
During an interview with TVC Breakfast Morning Show, Mr. Ejianya urged Mr. Peter Obi not to run in the 2027 presidential election, claiming that the politicians forming the coalition are also responsible for Nigeria’s current challenges.
The media expert advised Mr. Obi to let President Tinubu finish his term, noting that the coalition lacked the structure and sincerity to allow Obi to become the presidential flag bearer in 2027.
He emphasised that the coalition is not strong or united enough to provide Peter Obi with the platform he needs to succeed in the upcoming presidential election.
According to him, the group is nothing special, just a collection of politicians with divergent paths and personal goals.
Their alliance, he argued, stems solely from the realisation that Tinubu would not have been elected president in 2023 if they had remained united.
“There is nothing special about them. All of them have their own trajectories and personas, as well as political trajectories and governance accomplishments.
“However, Tinubu became president in 2023 due to internal divisions. So, I believe they are now realising that if they had not divided their interests and put all of their eggs in one basket, they could have pulled a bigger trigger,” he explained.
Mr. Ejianya went on to say that whatever differences caused them to split up in 2023 continue to exist, and these differences may prevent the coalition from making any meaningful progress.
“They still have those differences within them. Even though they appear to be working together physically, I see a division.
“They all have personal interests that outweigh national interests, even as they form this coalition,” he said.
He also examined the coalition’s composition, noting that the majority of the politicians involved had previously been members of the PDP.
He questioned why they did not simply rebuild the PDP rather than forming a new group, claiming that the same issues that caused their split in the PDP would most likely resurface in the new coalition.
On the other hand, Ejianya admitted that the coalition appears to be banking on Peter Obi’s popularity, as many Nigerians still see him as a viable candidate in 2027. Nonetheless, he advised the former Anambra State governor to withdraw from the 2027 race.
“If Peter Obi becomes the presidential candidate, Atiku will never agree to be his deputy, and none of them will agree to take a back seat. They are all concerned with their own personal interests rather than those of the country.”
