Published 2 months ago9 minute read

'Tis Oscar season. If you're a movie buff, then the is like a holiday. It's a time to gather around your TV -- maybe with friends, family, and some snacks -- and celebrate the year's biggest stars and greatest movies. Viewers always have the same questions heading into the ceremony. Who will win the "Big 5" awards? Which film will be named Best Picture? What winners will use the podium to give overly politicized speeches? And will something absolutely insane happen?

After all, the Oscars aren't just about glitz and glamour. Since its inception, the ceremony has seen its share of controversy, scandal, and shocking moments. For this particular article, we decided to focus on mishaps and scandals rather than snubs and surprising victories. And with the Oscars right around the corner, what better time to relive these 8 shocking moments from the Academy Awards over the last 25 years?

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper Oscar's
ABC

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper co-starred in the 2018 remake of A Star Is Born. The film scored several Oscar nominations, including Best Original Song for its hit single, "Shallow". The song was performed by Gaga and Cooper, who delivered a live rendition of the duet at the 91st Academy Awards. It was a hot and heavy performance, full of sensual moments and lots of touching. Fireworks seemed to explode all around them as they sat behind the piano, singing into the same microphone.

The duo's magnetic chemistry set the internet on fire. Viewers became convinced that the pair were romantically involved after witnessing their steamy performance. And there wouldn't be anything wrong with that, if both parties weren't already in serious relationships with other people. But both Cooper and Gaga denied that they were ever romantically involved.

Though not conventional blockbusters, these movies have found a devoted fan following due to their artful, poetic, and humbling portrayals of love.

John Cena Oscars
ABC

Part of the Oscars' allure is seeing what the stars will wear to the ceremony. Who wore what? Who wore it better? Who was the best dressed, and who was the worst dressed? And, in the case of the 96th Academy Awards, who's going to show up naked?

While presenting the award for Best Costume Design, former WWE wrestler John Cena appeared on stage seemingly naked, except for a pair of sandals on his feet and a presenter's card covering his lower region. Cena didn't really go streaking. It was a planned skit that poked fun at the infamous streaker who interrupted the Academy Awards back in 1974. It was all in good fun and turned out to be highlight of the ceremony. But that didn't stop people from dropping their drawers --uh, jaws when Cena shuffled naked onto the stage.

Jennifer Lawrence Oscars
ABC

It's every actor's worst nightmare. You're declared the winner of an award that you've wanted your entire life. Stunned, you rise from your seat and make your way to the stage to claim your award. And on your way up the stairs, you trip and fall on your face in front of Hollywood's biggest stars on national television.

This nightmare became reality for Jennifer Lawrence at the85th Academy Awards, where she won the Oscar for Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook. Despite the embarrassing moment, Lawrence laughed it off and remained in good spirits, humorously taunting competitor Meryl Streep when she reached the podium.

Parasite blackout
ABC

It's every filmmaker's dream to get on that stage and accept the Oscar for Best Picture. The team behind 2019's South Korean film, Parasite, experienced that dream firsthand when their movie claimed the top prize at the 92nd Academy Awards.

The Oscars are known for hurrying winners off stage with music. But in this case, the Academy decided to pull the plug on the winners instead, cutting off their mic and the stage lights, shrouding them in darkness. This incited angry jeers and boos from the audience, who repeatedly chanted "Up!" until the lights were turned back on, allowing the victors to finish their “Thank You” speeches.

John Travolta at Oscars
ABC

Idina Menzel took the world by storm as the original Elphaba in the Broadway musical Wicked. And then she did it again in 2013 when she voiced Elsa in the Disney animated phenomenon Frozen, belting out the year's most popular song, "Let It Go." This tune was on repeat in every family's household, its lyrics engraved into the minds of both children and parents alike. It earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song, and Idina herself was invited to perform a live rendition of the song at the 86th Academy Awards.

John Travolta appeared on stage to introduce Idina's performance. He seemed like a solid pick at the time; Travolta is, after all, a musical legend himself. What could possibly go wrong? The answer: everything. Travolta apparently panicked when he looked at the teleprompter and saw the grouping of letters that was Idina Menzel's name. He mispronounced her name, calling her "Adele Dazeem," and then bowed his head at the camera, as if he didn't just completely butcher the introduction. Idina didn't flinch though and went on to rock the ceremony with her performance.

Angelina Jolie Oscar
ABC

Long before she became a Hollywood sex symbol, long before "Brangelina" and all those kids, Angelina Jolie weirded out America on the red carpet of the 72nd Academy Awards when she locked lips with...her own brother, James Haven. People raised their eyebrows at this strangely passionate kiss. Angelina wound up winning that night for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Girl, Interrupted. And one of the first things to come out of her mouth when she reached the podium was, "I'm so in love with my brother right now." A strange way to kick off your acceptance speech.

The odd relationship between Jolie and her brother left viewers scratching their heads and shifting uncomfortably in their seats, and it still does 25 years later.

Trey Parker & Matt Stone Oscar
Comedy Central

One of the most iconic parts of any awards ceremony is the pre-show. The red carpet is rolled out for all the celebrities and attendees, who flaunt their attire as they make their way through cheering crowds and flashing lights to the ceremony. One of the most iconic ensembles is the green Versace dress that Jennifer Lopez wore to the 2000 Grammy Awards. Another one is the pink Ralph Lauren dress that Gwyneth Paltrow wore to the 71st Academy Awards. And then there are the legendary dresses worn by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

Parker was nominated for Best Original Song for "Blame Canada" at the 72nd Academy Awards. But rather than show up in tuxedos, Parker and Stone went a different route and wore dresses similar to Lopez and Paltrow, respectively. It was their way of giving the finger to the Academy Awards and poking fun at celebrity pop culture. "It's such a magical evening," the two kept saying during red carpet interviews. It almost seemed like the pair showed up to the Oscar's on acid -- and that's because they did. Would you expect anything less from the comedic and controversial creators of South Park?

Adrien Brody & Halle Berry Oscar's
ABC

At 29, Adrien Brody became the youngest actor to win Best Actor at the 75th Academy Awards for his performance in The Pianist. In his state of euphoria, Brody grabbed award presenter Halle Berry and planted a big, unexpected kiss on her lips. Berry was a good sport, laughing it off afterward. But the moment nevertheless sparked controversy for its nonconsensual nature.

Brody is nominated for Best Actor once again at the upcoming Academy Awards for his performance in The Brutalist. Let's hope he doesn't repeat this stunt if he wins. Otherwise, Brody might find himself a victim of today's cancel culture.

Warren Beatty Oscar's
ABC

Poor Warren Beatty. The legendary actor was joined on stage by actress Faye Dunaway, who presented the award for Best Picture at the 89th Academy Awards. The audience chuckled when Beatty opened the envelope and hesitated to announce the winner, believing that he was humorously drawing out the moment and the suspense. But really, Beatty was confused by the card in his hand, which read "Emma Stone, La La Land". Seeing this, Faye Dunaway incorrectly announced La La Land as Best Picture.

The cast and crew of La La Land happily assembled on stage and delivered emotional acceptance speeches. But there seemed to be some commotion and hubbub in the background, as Oscar crew members joined the group on stage and exchanged words with the producers. What was at first a dream-come-true for La La Land quickly turned into a nightmare. As it turns out, Beatty and Dunaway were handed the wrong envelope. The correct card named Moonlight as Best Picture, which Beatty later presented to the cameras as proof.

The cast and crew of La La Land graciously forfeited their win, inviting the cast and crew of Moonlight on stage to accept their award. This isn't just the biggest mistakes at the Oscar's over the last 25 years; it's arguably the biggest mistake in Academy Award history. To this day, some people argue that the biggest mistake that night was actually naming Moonlight Best Picture over La La Land.

Oscar Predictions 2025: Where the Race Stands Now

Things have changed. Here are our current frontrunners.

Will Smith Chris Rock Oscar's
ABC

It was the slap seen all around the world. And if you lived through it, then you know exactly what moment we're talking about. Comedian Chris Rock is known for his racy and offensive jokes. While hosting the 94th Academy Awards, Rock poked fun at Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head with a reference to the film G.I. Jane. Her husband, Will Smith, laughed at the joke. His wife, however, did not.

Changing his tune, Will Smith approached Chris Rock on stage and slapped the crap out of him on national TV. He then casually returned to his seat, where he berated Rock and yelled at him to "Keep my wife's name out your f*cking mouth!" It was a shocking moment that left viewers with their mouths open and the audience in dead silence. But no one was more stunned than Rock, who took the hit like a champ and handled the moment with grace and professionalism.

Smith was asked to leave the ceremony, but he refused. He later won Best Actor for his role in King Richard, which was unjustly received with a standing ovation from the audience. The idea of assaulting a comedian for a joke is nothing short of disgusting. And Smith has paid dearly for his outburst. He resigned from the Academy and has been banned from attending all Oscar-related events for 10 years. Despite issuing apology videos to Rock, Smith's brand took a massive hit that night. His wholesome image is in the toilet, and several projects have parted ways with him. The slap is easily the most shocking moment at the Oscar's over the last 25 years, maybe even the most shocking moment in the Academy history.
