In the audience measurement report for the same period CA noted that there has been an increase in internet accessibility particularly in urban areas owing to well-established infrastructure, featuring a comprehensive network of high-speed broadband and cellular connectivity.

CA further noted that urban areas have better socioeconomic resources, fostering greater accessibility of digital devices and technology adoption compared to rural regions.

CA reported that at the end of the second quarter, fixed Internet subscriptions experienced significant growth with the total number of Kenyans using fixed internet subscriptions rising from 1,574,823 at the end of the first quarter in September 2024 to 1,718,679 at the end of Q2 in December 2024.

"During the reference period, most customers (39.7%) subscribed to data speeds between 10Mbps and 30 Mbps, marking a shift from previous quarters during which most customers had subscribed to data speeds between 2Mbps and 10Mbps," CA reported.

Most companies experienced growth in subscriptions, with notable increases for Safaricom PLC, Poa Internet Kenya Ltd, and Vilcom Network Limited which doubled the number of subscribers from Q1 to Q2.

Safaricom PLC recorded the highest market share in fixed data subscriptions, followed by Jamii Telecommunications Ltd, Wananchi Group (Kenya) Ltd, and Poa Internet Kenya Ltd.

Compared to Q1, Safaricom PLC recorded an increase of 45,314 subscriptions, although its market share slightly decreased from 36.6% to 36.1%. Jamii Telecommunications Ltd also grew by 21,030 subscriptions, but its market share dropped from 24.4% to 23.6%.

Poa Internet Kenya Ltd saw a significant growth of 39,421 subscriptions, raising its market share from 12.6% to 13.8%. Similarly, Vilcom Network Limited more than doubled its subscriptions from 27,734 to 54,991, boosting its market share from 1.8% to 3.2%.

Wananchi Group (Kenya) Ltd was the only major provider that recorded a decline, losing 988 subscriptions and dropping its market share from 16.8% to 15.4%.

Mawingu Networks Ltd, Starlink Internet Services Kenya, Liquid Telecommunications Kenya, and Vijiji Connect Ltd all showed modest increases in subscriptions, though their market shares remained largely unchanged.

Earlier, TUKO.co.ke reported that Vilcom Networks, a Kenyan internet provider, revamped its fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) pricing structure to enhance value, accessibility, and flexibility for customers amid growing competition from Starlink and Safaricom.

The new packages range from 8Mbps for KSh 1,999 to 500Mbps for KSh 11,999, with many plans offering speed upgrades at no additional cost.

Vilcom’s CEO, Agnes Limo, stated that the revised plans are tailored to meet the diverse needs of residential and business clients, promising faster downloads, smoother streaming, and improved online experiences.

The company's move seems to have worked as the company attracted more subscribers and more than doubled its subscribers.
