A yet- to-be-identified residents has reportedly died while two others sustained injuries when robbers attacked Apo resettlement in in Apo district of Abuja.
Abuja Metro reports that police operatives from the FCT police command engaged the robbers in a gun battle.
The FCT Police Commissioner, Ajao Saka Adewale, who disclosed this on Tuesday, said the incident happened on Monday around 10:30pm.
He said the operatives received a distress call from some commercial cyclists complaining that some suspected robbers were attempting to attack the Zone E Extension area of Apo Resettlement, in Abuja.
He said the police immediately mobilised to engage them.
He said the DPO of Apo Division, CSP Uchenna Igwebuike, mobilised his men to engage the suspects in a gunfire in the area.
According to him, the attackers engaged the police team in a fierce gun battle, adding that a reinforcement team led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Isyaku Sharu, was invited to the scene.
He said the operatives responded with superior firepower, which forced the assailants to flee into the surrounding hills.
He said a joint manhunt involving police operatives and local vigilantes was currently ongoing to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
“During the operation, three persons were rescued with varying degrees of injuries inflicted by the attackers,” he said.
He said a light green Toyota Corolla with registration number GWA 620 AU, belonging to one of the victims, was recovered at the scene.
CP Adewale said all the injured victims were immediately evacuated to Sahad Hospital, Apo Resettlement, for emergency medical care, where, he said, one of them later died.
He said, “Sadly, one of the victims later succumbed to the injuries and was pronounced dead by medical personnel. His remains had been deposited at the hospital’s morgue.’’
The CP, who extended his condolences to the family of the deceased, assured residents that the command remained fully committed to protecting lives and property across the territory.
