Yemen's Houthis claim attack on aircraft carrier in Red Sea; death toll from US strikes rises to 53

Yemen's Houthis targeted US aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman and its warships with ballistic missiles and drones in response to US attacks on Yemen, the group's military spokesperson said on Sunday, without offering evidence.

Meanwhile, the death toll of the attacks has risen to 53, a spokesperson for the Houthi-run health ministry said.

Five children and two women were among the victims while the number of injuries rose to 98, Anees Alsbahi, the spokesperson, added on X.

On Saturday, US President Donald Trump launched large-scale military strikes against Houthis over the group's attacks against Red Sea shipping.

Trump also warned Iran, the Houthis' main backer, that it needed to immediately halt support for the group. He said if Iran threatened the US, "America will hold you fully accountable and, we won't be nice about it!"

The head of Iran's Revolutionary Guards vowed "decisive" responses to any attacks, after Trump warned the Islamic republic to stop backing Yemen's Houthi rebels.

"Iran will not wage war, but if anyone threatens, it will give appropriate, decisive and conclusive responses," Hossein Salami said in a televised speech that followed deadly US strikes on Yemen.

The unfolding US strikes on Yemen, which one US official told Reuters might continue for weeks, represent the biggest US military operation in the Middle East since Trump took office in January. It came as the US ramps up sanctions pressure on Tehran while trying to bring it to the negotiating table over its nuclear programme.
