Woman, Girl Seriously Injured As Speeding Commercial Bus Crashes In Lagos | Sahara Reporters

Preliminary investigations, according to LASTMA, revealed that the bus suffered a sudden brake failure before crashing into a private car ahead of it.

An auto crash involving a commercial bus and a private vehicle on Tuesday around Iyana-Oworo, near Olopomeji inward Car Wash, left two people—a woman and a young girl—seriously injured.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident and urged motorists to comply with speed limits and traffic safety regulations to prevent similar accidents.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, said the crash was caused by a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus (registration number LSR 701 EF), which was reportedly overloaded and travelling at excessive speed.

Preliminary investigations, according to LASTMA, revealed that the bus suffered a sudden brake failure before crashing into a private car ahead of it.

“The impact of the collision resulted in extensive damage to the commercial Hiace bus and left 2 passengers in a serious distress,” the statement said.

“A woman, whose legs were fractured, and a young lady with multiple serious injuries were swiftly evacuated and handed over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), who transported them to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment.”

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed concern over the increasing cases of reckless driving and non-compliance with traffic regulations, especially by commercial drivers.

“We must collectively recognise that road safety is a shared responsibility. The installation of speed limiters is a deliberate policy to ensure that drivers operate within safe speed thresholds,” Mr. Bakare-Oki stated.

He also highlighted the importance of adhering to the Lagos State Government’s directive on speed-limiting devices, especially in commercial vehicles.

“This tragic incident might have been prevented had such regulations been followed,” he said.

He further extended “heartfelt wishes for the swift and full recovery of the injured victims,” reiterating LASTMA’s commitment to preserving lives and maintaining order across Lagos roads.
