The wife of a slain NYPD detective from Long Island received a humanitarian award for first responders in honor of her late husband in Huntington Thursday.

Stephanie Diller, 30, of Massapequa Park, received the Jacob's Light Humanitarian Award at the Suffolk County Heroes Breakfast in honor of her husband, Jonathan Diller, who was shot and killed during a traffic stop in March 2024. Stephanie Diller is also an emergency room nurse and mother to the couple's 2-year-old son.

“I want Jonathan’s story to be told because he deserves to be remembered," Diller said. "The world deserves his light and his son deserves to know the hero he was.”

Also honored at Thursday's event was Suffolk County Police Officer Brendon Gallagher, who was critically injured in a high-speed chase on the Long Island Expressway in January.

A colleague accepted the award on his behalf.

The event, held at Oheka Castle, was sponsored by Suffolk County Legis. Leslie Kennedy (R-Nesconset).

Diller described her late husband as kind, generous, loyal, thoughtful and funny.

“One of the things I always talk about is humanizing the badge, that there was a heartbeat behind that badge that day,” she said.

Diller started a scholarship in her husband's name at St. Mary’s High School in Manhasset that is given to students who embody values such as faith, courage and kindness.

Speaking at the event, James Jacobs, 62, of North Massapequa, a retired New York City firefighter and ambassador for the Tunnels to Towers Foundation, said first responders "don’t get nearly enough acknowledgment that they deserve. ... They’re willing to put themselves in danger to help other people.”

The nonprofit builds smart homes with special accommodations for seriously injured first responders and military personnel, and also helps pay off mortgages for the families of those killed in the line of duty, Jacobs said.

The foundation paid off Stephanie Diller’s mortgage after her husband's death.
