Wichita County sees surge in roof and vehicle damage repair calls

WICHITA COUNTY (KFDX/KJTL) — After roofs across Texoma took a beating during this weekend’s hailstorm, insurance agents and roofers say they’ve been flooded with calls.

Rebecca Lammers with Allstate Insurance says most calls are for roof and vehicle damage, but she’s also received reports of shattered windows, damaged siding and even downed fences.

Lammers says she’s never seen anything like this recent hailstorm in her 6 years as an agent.

“We’ve had a massive influx of calls. And I would say we probably filter anywhere between 3-400 calls just here at our local agency. This was a massive storm, and Allstate has already deemed it a catastrophe as far as our side. So, that’s nice because it’s not going to negatively impact anyone’s policies as far as their premiums when filing those claims,” Lammers said.

But before filing those claims, Lammers says you should contact your insurance first to go over your plan, then contact a reputable contractor to see if the damage warrants filing a claim.

AJ Garcia, owner of Assured Roofing & Construction, says you should shy away from doing business with out-of-town door-to-door contractors.

“You definitely want to stay local. Check Google reviews. Check with the Better Business Bureau. If they have a legitimate website, all those are key factors that you’re dealing with a legitimate roofing company,” Garcia said.

Since the storm, Garcia says they’ve inspected over 60 roofs in different cities. He has some things to look out for if you have damage but don’t know if it needs immediate repair.

“As far as on your roof, what you really need to fix immediately is if there any holes in your skylights. If there’s any holes in your hip and ridge, those need to be tarped. And those are the things you really need to worry about to stay watertight,” Garcia said.

As many deal with the storm’s aftermath, the key thing to take away is to do your homework and ensure the damage and the contractor is legit before signing any paperwork.
