Why Ramayan's Dipika Chikhlia is not interested in Ranbir Kapoor's film Ramayana; says 'Why should I fiddle with my image? - The Times of India
Dipika Chikhlia
, best known for portraying
Sita
in Ramanand Sagar’s iconic TV series
Ramayan
, remains deeply associated with the role even after more than three decades. While her co-star Arun Govil, who played Ram, is set to appear in Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming Bollywood adaptation of Ramayana alongside Ranbir Kapoor, Dipika has no interest in joining the project. She firmly believes in preserving her image as Sita and has decided not to take up any other role in adaptations of the epic.
In a recent interview with Siddharth Kannan, Dipika recalled an earlier opportunity where she was offered the role of Kaushalya in another Ramayan-based show. Initially, she was unsure about accepting it, but her brother advised her against it, saying, “You are known as Sita, and you should die as Sita.” This advice deeply resonated with her, leading her to make peace with the fact that her portrayal of Sita in the 1980s Ramayan remains unmatched in popularity and cultural impact.
“I clearly understood that people recognize me as Sita Ji, and nothing will become as popular as Sagar’s Ramayan,” Dipika said. “Then why should I fiddle with my image? I am Sita, and I have accepted it. For 35 years, I have carried the responsibility of being Sita—why should I try to be something else?”
Despite this strong association, Dipika emphasized that she does not personally believe herself to be a divine figure. She acknowledged that actors must remain grounded and not mistake their roles for reality. However, she also recognizes that audiences still perceive her through the lens of her most famous character, making it difficult for her to take on negative roles or ones that might alter her long-held image.

With this mindset, Dipika has chosen to step away from any further adaptations of Ramayan, reinforcing her legacy as the definitive Sita in the hearts of millions.
