What to watch this weekend.

It’s that time again. The work week has drawn to a close. Friday is here at last. I’m a just starting the final week of my Scotland trip, so I’ll be watching these shows and movies from across the pond, assuming I have much time to watch anything at all! For those of you with some time to kill this weekend, there’s plenty of new stuff to watch on Netflix, Apple TV, Prime Video and all the many streaming services we all subscribe to these days.

Being on holiday hasn’t stopped me from scouring the internet, looking for the very best new content for you, dearest readers, to feast your eyes on. So without further adieu, let’s dive right in!

If you have any tips or I missed something, shoot me a message on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook. You can check out last weekend’s streaming guide right here:

ForbesWeekend Streaming Guide: What To Watch This Weekend On Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV+ And More

Netflix’s latest star-studded limited series is getting somewhat mixed reviews, though those who enjoy Sirens seem to enjoy it quite passionately. The social satire follows estranged sisters as they navigate the world of the super-rich, deal with past trauma, and try to figure out their own peculiar relationship. Many are comparing it to The White Lotus. With Julianne Moore, Meghann Fahy, Milly Alcock and Kevin Bacon in the cast, this is definitely the must-watch show this weekend.

Netflix has already released several nostalgia-horror flicks under the Fear Street banner. I only caught the first one, which I felt missed the mark pretty badly. This fourth entry is getting much worse reviews, which does not bode well. On the other hand, maybe you just want to watch a slasher flick and not think about it too much, in which case Prom Queen might do the trick. The film series returns to Shadyside High, this time in 1988, as high school girls compete to become Prom Queen — or die trying. A brisk 90 minute runtime won’t set you back too much.

I actually know next to nothing about former quarterback superstar Brett Favre. I don’t even know why there’s a “v” in his last name, if you don’t even pronounce it. Maybe this new documentary will help shed light on the subject. If nothing else, you can learn about the scandals that the champion football player found himself mired in including a multi-million welfare controversy.

I used to think Big Mouth was pretty funny, but I guess the sheer relentlessness of its potty-mouthed humor finally got stale and I gave it up a few seasons back. Honestly, I didn’t even know it was still on! Season 8 will be the last for the kids and the hormone monsters and their twisted coming-of-age tale.

You never know with Guy Ritchie. Sometimes his films are brilliant and hilarious. Then you get something like King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword, which I tried to watch on an airplane once (I’m all about Arthurian legend!) and had to quit halfway in. That film has a 31% Rotten Tomatoes score. Ritchie’s new Apple TV+ exclusive Fountain Of Youth, starring John Krasinski and Natalie Portman, has a 32%. I so wanted this to be good. There just aren’t enough Indiana Jones style adventure films these days. I’ll still watch it, but with dramatically lowered expectations.

A teen coming-of-age drama about street-racing in a Pennsylvania town. Geared directly at the Dawson’s Creek demographic (is that still a relevant reference point?) this is a teen soap with race cars. You get the girls for the soap and the boys for the cars, or at least that seems to be the thinking here. It’s getting decent reviews, though it looks predictably hammy to me.

Confession: I was never a Pee-Wee Herman fan. I didn’t dislike Paul Reubens, and in fact I think he’s done great work in other things, I just found Pee-Wee deeply annoying. But man, this documentary looks terrific. Reubens passed away in 2023 from cancer, but thankfully for fans he’d already recorded a bunch of interviews for this posthumous documentary.

Nicole Kidman returns for Season 2 of Nine Perfect Strangers, which is the big competition for Netflix’s Sirens this week. I didn’t watch Season 1, and I continue to think that Kidman has spread herself as thin as Timothee Chalamet at this point. Anyways, this is another White Lotus-like (a subgenre of its own at this point) about strangers who gather at a wellness retreat and bite off more than they can chew, as the woman who runs it (Kidman) harbors her own dark secrets.

The profanely hilarious animated series Rick and Morty returns for its 8th season (two vulgar adult cartoons both come out the same week with their 8th season, what a coincidence) and it looks as wild as ever. Creator and main voice actor Justin Roiland was replaced after controversy upended his career, but the new voices of our titular heroes sound fine to me. New episodes come out on Sundays on Adult Swim and then on Max the following day.

It looks like Disney (wisely) played it pretty safe with Lilo & Stitch, giving fans a faithful adaptation of the animated movie. What a novel idea! While critics aren’t lavishing praise (70%) fans seem to be enjoying the remake (93%). I’ll probably just wait for Disney+.

Tom Cruise and the gang are back for one final, impossible mission. The second half of the two part “Reckoning” films, The Final Reckoning picks up right where Dead Reckoning left off. I really enjoyed that one, and I’m excited for one more stunt-laden spy-thriller from this franchise, though I think it’s a good call to put it to bed after this.

The only show I’m covering weekly while on my trip is The Last Of Us, which has had a really mixed-bag second season for a whole host of reasons (I list five of its biggest problems right here). One problem I didn’t mention in that post is the number of episodes. This Sunday is the finale, which means we only get 7 this season. It’s weird because it feels super rushed and like it’s dragged its feet at the same time. Maybe a couple more episodes would have helped, maybe not. Either way, the finale is almost upon us. Then another long wait!
