What's open this summer: A guide to Duke's campus services

Published 19 hours ago4 minute read

As many students prepare to live on campus over the summer, The Chronicle compiled a list of seasonal updates to Duke’s campus services.

Students living on campus who have paid their student health fee continue to have access to regular student health services, including primary care, the allergy clinic, STI testing and nutrition services.

Summer operating hours for the Student Health Center are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays, except Thursdays when it opens at 9 a.m. The center is closed from noon to 12:30 p.m.

Students can schedule appointments by calling 919-681-9355.

Hours and descriptions of other health services can be found on the Duke Student Health website.

Food points, credit and debit cards, and Flex points, are accepted at Duke Dining locations during the summer.

Marketplace, Gothic Grill, It’s Thyme and Pitchforks will be closed throughout the summer. Other locations have variable hours and dates of operation, which can be found online. Notably, most dining locations in the Brodhead Center close at 7 p.m. while Cafe and Saladelia Cafe at Perkins close at 3 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.

Students planning to bring a car to campus are required to have a valid parking permit from the Duke Parking and Transportation Services Office.

Those with an annual permit can continue to use their passes during the summer sessions, as permits expire in August.

All buses, including the C1, operate daily from 7:15 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends. The updated bus schedule and real-time bus locations can be tracked with TransLoc.

Duke Vans are also available daily from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. covering areas and times not served by campus buses.

Until Aug. 24, recreational facilities are operating on adjusted summer schedules, but will remain open for students, faculty, alumni and staff.

Students living off-campus still have access to recreational facilities.

Wilson Recreation Center and the West Campus courts are open from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends. The indoor climbing wall will only be available Monday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wilson will also be closed from Aug. 11 to Aug. 17.

Brodie Recreation Center and the East Campus courts are open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends.

Red Mango will open for the summer on May 27 and operate weekdays from noon to 7 p.m.

Three-on-three basketball and both singles and doubles table tennis tournaments are offered as intramural sports for summer term one. Students can register for these offerings on Duke’s IMLeagues page.

Group fitness classes will also continue during summer session one. Members and students must sign up in advance on the MyRec portal

All students, regardless of whether they are enrolled in summer courses, maintain full access to library services, including book checkout and equipment loans.

Perkins and Bostock Libraries open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, but close at 6 p.m. on Fridays. The libraries are open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays but closed on Saturdays. Perkins and Bostock will be closed July 4.

Lilly Library remains closed for renovations.

The front desk of the Student Mail Center is open weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. for package pick up. Students can access their individual mailboxes daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Students can ship packages at the Duke Technology Center, which has modified operating hours for the summer, opening from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
